The Lowdown
$2.76 Million Corner šø
The effort to preserve Mattituckās āLast Green Cornerā ended up carrying a much bigger price tag than anyone originally imagined.
Southold Town officials revealed this week that acquiring the 1.7 acre Main Road property through eminent domain ultimately cost $2.76 million, a figure that includes the land acquisition, updated appraisals, legal fees, and years of court battles.
The property at the center of the fight was purchased by the Brinkmann family in 2018 with plans for a new hardware and paint store. After a community led campaign to preserve the site as open space, the town voted in 2020 to take the land through eminent domain and turn it into a public park.
The legal fight stretched for years, eventually reaching the U.S. Supreme Court, which declined to hear the Brinkmannsā appeal in 2024.
Now, the town is preparing to pay a final $337,889 legal bill, an expense officials say will completely drain Southoldās contingency fund for the year.

Most people know Tuesdays as just another weekday. For Carissa Hope, itās game day.
The founder of NoFo SoDough starts before sunrise and spends the day baking sourdough loaves, chocolate chunk cookies, and her increasingly famous chocolate chocolate cupcakes. Most of that work actually began two days earlier.
What started as a search for answers after a Hashimotoās diagnosis has turned into one of the North Forkās most recognizable small food brands.
After years of struggling with inflammation and restrictive diets, Hope discovered that long-fermented sourdough worked for her when other breads didnāt.
Now she manages three sourdough starters: Bubbles, Bubbles Jr., and Stella, a reportedly 400 year old starter from England, and supplies local favorites like Barrow Food House and Bread and Butter & Bottle.

U.S. Open Traffic š
Before sunrise, North Fork commuters heading toward the South Fork found themselves sitting in a massive backup stretching through Greenport as traffic bound for the U.S. Open converged on the North Ferry.
Drivers reported lines reaching from the ferry terminal all the way back to the Welcome to Greenport sign on Route 25.
The timing is particularly frustrating because Greenport recently completed a $3.1 million ferry queue expansion designed to reduce neighborhood backups.
The U.S. Open is drawing thousands of visitors to Shinnecock Hills this week, while road work on Shelter Island and the upcoming Shelter Island 10K are adding extra pressure to an already strained transportation system. ($)

Shinnecock Marshals ā³ļø
About 65 North Fork Country Club members are volunteering as marshals at Shinnecock Hills, helping manage crowds, crosswalks, grandstands, and player movement around the 12th hole.
The assignment sounds simple until you realize thousands of spectators will be funneled through the area every day.
For captains Peter Sabat, Don Wilcenski, and John Stype, planning for the week began months ago with meetings, volunteer coordination, credential distribution, and making sure dozens of marshals are exactly where they need to be when tournament play begins.
The job isn't glamorous. Volunteers pay a $225 registration fee, complete training, work long shifts on their feet, and spend hours holding "Quiet Please" signs while trying not to interfere with cameras, shot tracking technology, or the players themselves. ($)

Sculpture Season šØ
If you've spotted what looks like a giant sea creature crawling out of the creek at Sylvester Manor, you're not imagining things.
The striking installation is part of the third annual Sculpture@Sylvester Manor exhibition, which returned with 19 large scale works spread throughout the historic Shelter Island property.
This year's theme, "[R]evolution," invited artists to explore ideas inspired by both the American Revolution and evolution in nature, creating a mix of pieces that blend history, landscape, and imagination.
Curated by Tom Cugliani, the exhibition has become one of Shelter Island's most unique summer traditions. What began as a one time idea has evolved into an annual showcase that brings nationally recognized artists and local creatives together.

Animal of The Week
Meet Simba š¾
Meet Simba, a handsome tabby with striking green eyes, a soft striped coat, and the kind of quiet confidence that comes with knowing exactly who he is. He's not the type to burst into a room demanding attention. Instead, Simba prefers a more thoughtful introduction, taking in his surroundings and sizing things up from a comfortable distance.
Give him a little time though, and you'll start to see his sweet personality shine through. A toy to investigate, a calm conversation, or a patient hand offering a few head scratches is often all it takes. Once Simba feels comfortable, he leans into affection in his own gentle way, trading his reserved first impression for quiet companionship and plenty of purr-worthy moments.
Simba is looking for someone who appreciates that the best friendships aren't always rushed. For the right person, he'll be the kind of companion who makes a house feel a little more peaceful and a lot more like home.
