The Lowdown
š¦ Ducks, Dollars & Community Love
Long Island showed up big time for the āFlock Togetherā fundraiser, pulling in over $50,000 to support Crescent Duck Farm workers laid off after Januaryās bird flu outbreak. In just two weeks, local chefs, wineries, and businesses turned an idea into a buzzing night at Tellerās in Islip, packed with tastings, a silent auction, and a whole lot of heart.
Crescent Duck Farm, the last of Long Islandās historic duck farms, is a staple for local restaurants ā and the community wasnāt about to let that legacy fade. The best part? The farm hatched 3,700 ducklings just days before the event, a perfect sign that brighter days are ahead.
With so much love pouring in, organizers are already hinting at another event later this year. Good vibes, great food, and a comeback story in the making ā what more could you ask for? ($)
šāāļø Southoldās Got a New Race to Watch
Southold Town Councilman (and craft beer brewer) Greg Doroski just announced heās running for Suffolk County Legislatureās First District seat, taking on incumbent Catherine Stark this election season.
Doroski, a Democrat, was inspired by former Legislator and current Southold Supervisor Al Krupski, who praised Doroski as the perfect candidate to continue his legacy of fighting for local issues ā from blocking tax breaks for controversial developments to pushing for land preservation.
On the other side, Republican Catherine Stark isnāt new to the game. She stepped into the seat in 2023 but has years of experience, including as Chief of Staff for Krupski himself. Sheās all about helping towns tackle infrastructure challenges like sewage treatment and flood protection.
With Doroskiās town-level know-how and Starkās deep county connections, this race is shaping up to be one to watch.
āļø 145 Years of Nautical Charm and Community
At the end of Main Street in Greenport, Prestonās Chandlery has been the go-to spot for marine supplies since 1880 ā and yes, itās still run by the same family (well, technically, the second family, but whoās counting?). Andrew and Peter Rowsom keep the legacy alive, selling everything from ship charts to Sperry Top-Siders, with their Portuguese water dogs, Calypso and Skippy, roaming the shop.
The store doubles as a living museum, with century-old cash registers, cannons by the door, and even the occasional on-the-spot bilge pump repair with parts from the ā70s. And if you bought a kayak during the pandemic? Andrew mightāve delivered it to your dock himself ā by boat.
Through changing tides, Prestonās remains a Greenport institution, where you might pop in for a jacket and leave with a local sailorās advice. As Andrew says, if you can make a living and live out here, why wouldnāt you? Congrats on 145 years!
