Walk to End Alzheimerās š¶
The Alzheimerās Association is officially gearing up for its fourth annual North Fork Walk to End Alzheimerās, returning to Peconic Landing on Oct. 3 with a goal of raising $140,000 after last yearās event brought in a record setting $123,000.
The walk has quickly become one of those events where nearly everyone seems to know someone connected to the cause. Which makes sense considering Long Island is home to roughly 62,000 people living with Alzheimerās, while millions more family members and friends are serving as caregivers behind the scenes.
At a kickoff event at Tuckerās Taproom, organizers spoke about the emotional and financial toll the disease continues to have on families, especially across the North Fork, which has the oldest population of any community in New York State.
Volunteer co-chair Nancy Chandler shared some of the Alzheimerās Associationās brain health recommendations, including exercise, sleep, healthy eating and keeping your mind active.

Revolutionary War Trail šŗšø
Turns out the North Fork was pretty busy during the Revolutionary War, and now five local historical organizations are teaming up to tell the full story through a new Revolutionary War Trail.
The trail connects exhibits at Hallockville Museum Farm, Cutchogue-New Suffolk Historical Council & Museums, Southold Historical Museum, East End Seaport Museum and Oysterponds Historical Society, giving visitors a chance to piece together what life looked like on the North Fork during the 1770s.
The idea came from Cutchogue-New Suffolk Historical Council executive director Mark MacNish, who realized local museums were each telling different pieces of the Revolutionary War story, but not necessarily connecting the dots. So now thereās an actual trail and brochure linking them all together. ($)

Veterans Day Wedding Giveaway š
U.S. Army Reserve Captain Jacob Feibusch and Emily Siegel of Cutchogue were selected as the winners of Peconic Landingās 14th Annual Veterans Day Wedding Giveback, which provides a complimentary wedding package at Brecknock Hall to a current or former military service member.
Captain Feibusch currently serves as a Brigade HR Officer with the U.S. Army Reserve while also somehow balancing life as owner of Davy Jones Shellfish Company, a 20-acre oyster farm in Peconic Bay. On top of that, he serves on the board of the Long Island Farm Bureau and as treasurer of the Long Island Oyster Growers Association.
The coupleās story goes back even further than the oyster farm though. They first met in kindergarten in Kings Park before reconnecting years later during college and starting their relationship in 2020.
Siegel now teaches seventh grade English in the Eastport-South Manor school district and comes from a military family herself, with both her father and grandfather having served in the Army.

DEC Closes Shellfish Harvesting š¦Ŗ
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation issued an emergency shellfish harvesting closure Friday affecting parts of Riverhead and Southold over concerns about potentially dangerous marine biotoxins.
The closure took effect immediately on May 15 and impacts several local waterways, including Terry Creek and Meetinghouse Creek in Riverhead, along with James Creek and nearby waters in Southold.
Officials say the concern is the possible presence of marine biotoxins, which can accumulate in shellfish and make them unsafe to eat. Under the emergency designation, harvesting shellfish or carnivorous gastropods from the affected waters is now prohibited until testing shows toxin levels are safe again.
