Parking Politics in Greenport 🚗

Greenport’s got a parking problem, and not the kind where you’re circling Front Street on a Saturday night. New rules passed in 2023 say any business bigger than 1,500 square feet has to either build parking or pay the village a fee. Sounds simple, right? Not so much.

Critics, residents, shop owners, even former Mayor Dave Kapell, say the new code is choking out small businesses and fueling the empty-storefront blues.

Back in 1990, Greenport actually scrapped parking requirements because they were impossible to meet in a tight little village. The result? A restaurant boom. Now, opponents say the village is undoing decades of progress by piling rules back on.

  • Small biz squeeze: Fees and parking mandates make it harder for Mom & Pop shops to get off the ground.

  • Empty windows: Post-COVID vacancies haven’t gone away, and red tape isn’t helping.

  • Fear of “Hamptonization”: Some say the mayor’s efforts to keep big investors out are also keeping the right kind of growth away.

  • Housing vs Parking: Affordable housing plans have stalled while parking takes center stage.

Mulch Mayhem đŸ”„

What started as a small mulch fire at the Southold recycling center Wednesday morning turned into an all-day (and all-night) battle.

Cutchogue FD first got the call around 8:18 AM and, with help from Southold FD’s tanker, thought they had it 90% contained by late morning. But by 9:30 PM, surprise, it was back, deeper and more widespread.

That kicked off round two, with tankers rolling in from East Marion, Riverhead, Flanders, Mattituck, and Greenport. Firefighters had to break apart the entire 25–30 foot mulch pile to reach the base.

Final flames were out by 12:45 AM, and crews didn’t clear the scene until 2 AM.

Foodie Friday đŸœ

This week we’re serving up one of our all-time favorite family traditions: the Labor Day Low Country Boil.

Picture this, giant pot bubbling with shrimp, mussels, clams, sausage, corn, and potatoes. Once it’s cooked, everything gets dumped onto a newspaper-covered table for the ultimate end of summer feast. It’s messy, it’s casual, and it’s best enjoyed elbow-to-elbow with family and friends. Because nothing says goodbye summer like cracking shells and reaching across the table for just one more ear of corn.

What You’ll Need

  • 1 Really Big Pot

  • 1 Tbsp seafood seasoning (Old Bay or Zatarain’s), or more to taste

  • 5 lbs red potatoes

  • 3 (16 oz) packages cooked kielbasa sausage, cut into 1-inch pieces

  • 8 ears fresh corn, husked

  • 5 dozen little neck clams

  • 5 lbs mussels

  • 4 lbs large shrimp (we leave the shells on, but you do you)

How to Make It

  1. Fill your really big pot about ⅓ of the way with water, season generously, and bring to a boil over outdoor cooker or stovetop.

  2. Add potatoes and cook for 5 minutes. Toss in the sausage and cook another 5 minutes.

  3. Break corn ears in half, add to the pot, and cook for 5 more minutes.

  4. Add the clams and mussels. Cook for another 5 minutes or until the clams pop open.

  5. When the potatoes are nearly tender and clams are almost all open, add the shrimp . Cook for about 3 minutes or until shrimp are cooked through, yet tender.

  6. Drain, pour everything out onto a newspaper covered table, and dig in!

A boil is summer’s way of saying: don’t go yet, pull up a chair, roll up your sleeves, and let the season linger a little longer.
