San Simeon Evacuated 🚨

Around 4:30 AM, Monday morning firefighters responded to reports of smoke inside San Simeon by the Sound.

Crews from Greenport, Southold, and Mattituck swarmed the scene, joined by ambulances from more than a dozen agencies. The culprit? A malfunctioning air handler in the facility’s HVAC system, scary, but not a fire.

Still, safety came first. Every resident was evacuated, wheeled onto buses and ambulances bound for alternate care facilities under orders from the state Health Department. Some were brought to Peconic Landing, while others were transported to hospitals in Greenport and Riverhead. ($)

Starting October 16, sushi lovers are in for a treat. Acclaimed sushi chef Akio Kon is taking over Ellen’s on Front every Thursday night, serving up two intimate omakase seatings (5 PM & 7 PM) for just 10 guests each.

The menu? A love letter to local waters, featuring Peconic Bay scallops, Montauk tuna, Atlantic salmon, and whatever else the tides bring in.

Golden Acres Grows On 🧑‍🌾

If you’ve ever cruised down Peconic Bay Boulevard in Jamesport and wondered what’s hiding behind those London plane trees, it’s not just another patch of farmland. It’s Golden Acres Organic Farm, a 37-acre slice of East End history.

Once known as Golden Earthworm Organic Farm, this land has seen it all, from horse-powered plows in the 1950s to CSA boxes filled with heirloom veggies today. When longtime stewards Matt Kurek and Maggie Wood moved their operation to Vermont last year, they passed the torch to Kelly Brennan and her family.

Everything sold at the stand is grown right there on site. Brennan also donates extra produce weekly to Food Rescue-North Fork and collaborates with Slow Food East End, earning the farm a coveted Snail of Approval.

Coming up next: farm to table dinners, workshops, and beekeeping classes.

2025 Helen Wright Prince Award 🏆

When Rafael Morais first walked into an American classroom as a teenager from Brazil, he didn’t understand a single word. Fast forward nearly 20 years, and he’s standing in the Mattituck High School library, surrounded by students, colleagues, and family. This time as the recipient of Southold’s 2025 Helen Wright Prince Award, the town’s top honor for promoting diversity and inclusion.

Today, Rafael serves as the neighborhood liaison for the Mattituck-Cutchogue School District, making sure every student, especially those from migrant or non-English-speaking families, feels seen, supported, and at home. Whether it’s translating, connecting families to food and resources, or just showing up with a smile.

The award, named for Helen Wright Prince, a legendary local advocate who spent decades supporting migrant families, is presented each year during Bullying Awareness Month.

Local Spotlight

Towel Trouble 🐶🐱

Got a stack of old towels collecting dust? The North Fork Animal Welfare League’s Southold location would love to take them off your hands. They are running dangerously low, and their furry residents are counting on the community to help restock.

Towels might not sound glamorous, but they’re essential. They’ll gladly accept gently used or new towels in any size, but bath and beach towels are in especially high demand.

So, if you’ve got a few extras hiding in a linen closet, drop them off and make a difference for the four-legged locals who need it most.
