The Lowdown

Refill, Reuse, Repeat ♻️

After more than a decade of Navy service, Dominique and Charles Hydell Jr. traded aircraft carriers for Main Road Southold and turned a shared environmental mindset into a storefront with a mission.

On St. Patrick’s Day 2025, the couple opened Save the Container, a zero waste refill shop focused on cutting plastic use one bottle at a time.

Long deployments at sea sharpened their awareness around waste, especially when you’re living on a boat for nine months and watching exactly what goes overboard and what comes back to shore.

The concept is simple: bring your own container, weigh it, fill it with shampoo, conditioner, body wash, lotion, baby wash, or all-purpose cleaner, then weigh it again at checkout. Any container works, as long as it holds liquid.

Rally Falls Just Short 🏀

Down 23 midway through the third quarter, the second seeded Settlers staged a furious rally in the Suffolk County Class C final Sunday, ultimately falling just short, 62-59, to top-seeded Pierson.

It looked bleak early. Southold trailed 20-7 after one and 34-16 at the half. By the 4:33 mark of the third, the deficit ballooned to 44-21.

Then the switch flipped.

The Settlers outscored the Whalers 38-18 the rest of the way. Defense tightened. Shots started falling. The body language changed.

For the seniors, it stings. But this wasn’t a team folding under playoff nerves. It was a team that learned how to punch back. ($)

Animal of The Week

Meet Itsy 🐾

Meet Itsy, the tiniest titan on the block with a personality that enters the room five minutes before he does.

Don’t let the name fool you. There is absolutely nothing small about this guy’s presence. At just one year old, Itsy struts through life like he owns the sidewalks, the park, and possibly the entire zip code. He’s the self-appointed mayor of wherever he happens to be, a pocket sized powerhouse packed with charisma, energy, and just enough sass to keep things interesting. He’s convinced he’s the biggest dog on the block.

Itsy would thrive in an adult only home with people who appreciate a dog with opinions, spark, and a bold little streak. He’s not the blend into the background type. He’s expressive, animated, and full of zest, the kind of dog who makes you laugh daily and keeps life from ever feeling dull. With structure, activity, and plenty of affection, he’ll be fiercely loyal and endlessly entertaining. And after a full day of ruling his kingdom? He’s more than happy to curl up close and soak in the love.

Trivia Time 🧠

Your brain deserves more than scrolling and skimming. Each week we’ll hit you with one question designed to make you pause, scratch your head, and maybe argue with whoever’s sitting next to you. Think of it as a quick mental pit stop: a chance to flex your random knowledge, test your memory, or finally use that obscure fact you learned in 7th grade.

Local Spotlight

Maker Fair 🛠️

Peconic Community School is hosting its 7th Annual Maker Fair on Saturday, March 28 at its Cutchogue campus, a family friendly celebration of creativity, curiosity, and the simple joy of making things with your hands.

There will be 20–30 makers sharing their craft through free hands-on workshops and demonstrations. Think woodworkers, artists, engineers, scientists, inventors, and performers all showing how their ideas come to life. There will also be food trucks, live entertainment, campus tours, and plenty of opportunities for kids (and adults) to jump in and try something new.

And if you happen to be a maker yourself, whether that’s building, designing, crafting, or performing, the school is still welcoming participants to share their work with the community.
