The Lowdown

🦪 Oyster Love Story, Southold Edition

The oysters at Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County are getting cozy — spawning season is here! Scientists nudge mature oysters into romance by slowly warming their tank to mimic a sunny spring day. Once they get the hint, the magic happens, and millions of baby oysters are on the way.

Each adult oyster filters 55 gallons of water daily and builds reefs that protect shorelines and shelter marine life. The Southold facility cranks out 145 million oyster larvae annually, distributing them across Long Island to help restore local waters. Suffolk County exec Ed Romaine even hinted that oysters are just the beginning — sugar kelp could be next.

Beyond oysters, the team is working on resilient scallops to combat rising temps and pesky parasites. Their ultimate goal? Clean up the bays, reopen fisheries, and bring Long Island’s marine ecosystem back to life. ($)

🥗 37 Years of Healthy Vibes

The Market has been Greenport’s go-to for wholesome eats and good vibes. Founded by Shelley Scoggin in 1987, this Front Street gem serves up fresh salads, wraps, smoothies, and shelves stocked with organic goodies.

Shelley, an artist-turned-entrepreneur, started The Market to bring clean, preservative-free products to the North Fork — way before it was trendy. In 1997, the shop landed in its current spot, growing into a full-blown wellness hub.

Whether you're grabbing a green juice or chatting with locals, The Market is all about community and healthy living. Congrats Shelley!

🏀 Greenport Hoops- 35 Days, No Games, All Grit

The Greenport boys basketball team is stuck in the longest timeout ever — 35 days between games. Their last matchup? A solid 60-45 win over Ross on Feb 7. Next stop? The Southeast Regionals on March 15.

Head coach Justin Moore has turned this waiting game into a training camp 2.0. It’s back to basics: intense practices, extra scrimmages (shoutout to Mattituck, Port Jeff, and Riverhead), and fresh drills to keep the squad sharp.

The team’s not just coasting — seniors Nelson Shedrick (21.8 PPG), Kal-El Marine (12.5 PPG), and Taiquan Brumsey (10.0 PPG) practically live in the gym.

The goal? Punch a ticket to Binghamton for the state final four — a stage they haven’t seen since 2018. The Porters know the stakes, tip-off can’t come soon enough. Let’s go, Porters! 🏆 ($)
