The Lowdown

A Floating Family ⛵️

The Kalmar Nyckel may be a replica of a 17th century warship, but for many of the people who sail her, she's much more than a floating museum.

Capt. Lauren Morgens first fell in love with tall ships as a college student, eventually working her way from seasonal deckhand to captain of the Kalmar Nyckel. Alongside her, crew members have found careers, lifelong friendships, and in one case, even a place to live.

The original Kalmar Nyckel sailed in the 1600s before sinking off Scotland in 1652. The modern replica was launched in Delaware in 1997 and continues to bring maritime history to ports like Greenport, where the crew says the enthusiastic welcome keeps them coming back. ($)

Poker Run 🏍️

The annual Kait's Angels Poker Run & Pig Roast returns on Saturday, Aug. 9, bringing together motorcycles, classic cars, trucks and even the occasional Prius to raise money for local families in need.

Created in memory of Kaitlyn Doorhy, who passed away at just 20 years old, the event has become the biggest fundraiser for Kait's Angels, the nonprofit her family founded to continue her legacy of helping others. Every dollar raised stays on the North Fork, supporting neighbors facing difficult times.

This year's event takes place at Breeze Hill Farm & Preserve, with a day featuring poker hands, a pig roast, prizes, food and drinks.

Local Spotlight

Lobster Bake Club 🦞

Some dinners don't need much of a pitch. A lobster, and a glass of local wine usually do the talking.

That's the idea behind the Lobster Bake Club at Anker, where Thursdays are all about the classic seafood feast. The special includes a 1.5 pound lobster with corn, tri-colored potatoes, and mussels, plus discounted local wines that pair perfectly with the meal. It's simple, satisfying, and a dinner made for summer.

The only catch? Once they're out, they're out. If you've been looking for an excuse to gather a few friends, plan a date night, or simply treat yourself to a proper lobster dinner, all that's left to do is bring your appetite.
