Mitchell Park Ice Rink ā›øļø

Two months after a public back and forth over Greenport’s long discussed ice rink, village officials are finally moving the project from ā€œtalking about itā€ territory into actual planning mode.

At a four hour work session last week, officials outlined plans to hire a specialized engineering firm to design a permanent rink at Mitchell Park and figure out whether the village can realistically afford to run it long term without torching taxpayers in the process.

The conversation comes after Greenport BID president Rich Vandenburgh publicly criticized the village earlier this year for sitting too long on the $1.2 million state grant announced by Kathy Hochul back in August 2024.

Village leaders now say they’re pursuing a professionally engineered permanent rink instead of a quicker seasonal setup. But they also admitted getting answers will cost money upfront, potentially tens of thousands, before anyone knows whether the project will actually happen.

There’s also apparently NHL interest now in the mix. Village representatives recently met with league officials in Manhattan to discuss youth hockey partnerships and future programming possibilities if the rink gets built.

Oyster Industry Gets a Lifeline 🦪

Suffolk County shellfish farmers are officially getting some federal backup after this winter’s deep freeze hammered Long Island’s oyster industry to the tune of an estimated $2.4 million in losses.

The USDA has now issued a Disaster Designation for Suffolk County, opening the door for oyster growers to apply for low interest emergency loans and disaster assistance after weeks of snow, ice and freezing temperatures left many farms inaccessible back in February.

According to surveys conducted this spring, many growers reported losing more than 30% of production, with damage piling up across racks, lines, vessels and other aquaculture equipment. Some operations reportedly lost entire floating gear systems after ice dragged equipment across the bays.

Mattituck’s Fastest 400 šŸƒ

Jacob Malkush finished 17th overall in the 400 meter race at the East End Classic earlier this month, and still walked away smiling ear to ear.

The Mattituck junior officially broke the school’s 400 meter record with a time of 53.56 seconds, beating the previous mark of 54.05 set back in 2016 by Jack Dufton.

The moment itself sounded almost surreal. Malkush said he initially thought he misheard officials when they announced his time, until he looked over at his coach and got the nod. Then came the realization: mission accomplished.

Malkush says his long term goal is to eventually run the 400 in under 50 seconds. He also competes in long jump and runs on Mattituck’s 4x400 relay squad. ($)

Meet Genesis šŸ¾

Meet Genesis, the kind of dog who turns heads without even trying. Maybe it’s the striking blue eyes. Maybe it’s the constant happy grin. Or maybe it’s the way this beautiful 2 year old husky mix somehow manages to look both majestic and completely ready to be your couch buddy at the exact same time.

She’s sweet, social, and happiest when she’s close to her people, whether that means joining you for an adventure or simply hanging nearby while you go about your day. Genesis has that perfect balance of playful and relaxed energy. She loves spending time in playgroups, does great socializing with other dogs, and seems to genuinely enjoy making new friends wherever she goes.

Genesis feels like one of those dogs who settles into your life naturally, like she was always supposed to be there. If you’ve been looking for a loyal companion with movie star looks and an easygoing personality to match, this blue eyed beauty might just be your girl.

Music, Light & Stargazing Collide 🌌

On Saturday, May 30, the Custer Institute hosts KINETIC CONTINUUM, a Rites of Spring Music Festival performance that blends piano, light painting, multimedia art, and stargazing into one very not your average evening.

The performance features light painting artist Alina Wilczynski alongside Rites of Spring founder Paolo Bartolani on piano, creating an immersive experience built around the idea that energy, sound, light, and color all leave a trace behind. Very casual ā€œmusic under the stars,ā€ but also experimental, atmospheric, and probably something you’ll be thinking about on the drive home.

It’s a good one for classical music fans, art lovers, stargazers, and anyone who likes their Saturday night plans with a little more wonder baked in.
