The Lowdown

From Marilyn to Mo šŸŽ„

On Third Street in Greenport lives one of the coolest secrets in American film: the Historic Films Stock Footage Archive. What looks like a regular two-story house is actually a goldmine of vintage video—think rare musical performances, historic moments, and clips of celebs you’d never expect (hi, Marilyn Monroe).

Joe Lauro founded the archive back in 1991, and it’s been cranking out content for documentaries and TV series ever since. After ditching Manhattan for more space and better vibes, the team landed in Greenport in 2001 and never looked back.

Now it’s run by a small but mighty crew of longtime film buffs, who’ve swapped VHS chaos and daily FedEx runs for a slick digital system. They digitize everything from estate sale finds to home movies, preserving slices of Americana one reel at a time.

Some all-time greatest hits? Footage of the 1938 hurricane that slammed Greenport, a surprise cameo from the Three Stooges in a 1927 newsreel, and a local fisherman casually cruising with Marilyn. It’s history, it’s pop culture, it’s magic—and it’s all hiding in plain sight. ($)

What If Women Ran the World šŸŽØ

What happens when 12 visionary women reimagine the world? William Ris Gallery in Jamesport is about to show us. Their latest exhibit, If Women Ruled the World, opens May 3 and runs through June 1, featuring 12 powerhouse women artists from across the globe—Argentina to India, Croatia to Greece.

Expect bold perspectives on power, identity, and culture, brought to life through painting, sculpture, and mixed media. The concept was sparked by gallery owner Mary Cantone in a moment of reflection. Opening reception is Saturday, May 3 from 4–7 PM.

From Ball Field to Bloomfield 🌱

Mattituck’s getting a meadow makeover—and the bees are buzzing with excitement.

The Mattituck Park District is turning a retired baseball field on Bay Avenue into Sabat Meadow, a pollinator paradise packed with 43 native, drought-tolerant plants like milkweed, purple coneflower, and New England aster. It’s a home run for butterflies, birds, and biodiversity.

The vision? Berms, a half-mile hiking trail, wildlife houses, a kayak launch, and even a bridge over James Creek. But first: Planting Day. Show up with your green thumbs (and maybe a sunhat) on Saturday, April 26 at noon. CAST is providing the tools, and there’ll be a food drive on-site too.

Southold’s Got a Brand New Zoning Code šŸšØ

Fresh off the printer and still warm, Southold’s first zoning code rewrite since bell bottoms were in style has officially landed. Town Supervisor Al Krupski walked into a business forum like a proud dad at graduation, plunked down the 190-page behemoth, and boom—the Public Review Draft was live.

You can check it out (plus a snazzy new interactive map) at southoldzoningupdate.com.

So, what’s new?
🌱 Overlay districts for things like groundwater and coastal protection
šŸ˜ļø Hamlet mixed-use zones to keep things walkable and cute
šŸš— Rules that move parking lots behind buildings (finally!)

The code’s been in the works since Southold’s 2020 Comprehensive Plan and includes community input from the past two years. But it’s not done yet, 11 public forums are happening this spring, and your two cents are very much wanted.

Oh, and if reading zoning code sounds about as fun as watching paint dry, you can swing by the old Southold Savings Bank. Planning staff will be posted up with answers, and maybe even a smile.

New Captain on Deck šŸ‘®ā€ā™‚ļø

Southold PD’s got a new top brass, and he’s no rookie. After 28 years on the force, Scott Latham just leveled up to Captain. He started as a patrol officer in 1997 and has been climbing the ranks ever since: sergeant in 2010, lieutenant in 2021, and now, Captain as of April 15.

Latham’s not just here to wear the badge, he’s all about legacy. As administrative lieutenant, he helped write the book (literally) on department policy. Now, as captain, he’s shaping procedures that could guide Southold PD for the next 50+ years.

He’s also the department’s go-to for community engagement. Catch him at town halls, forums, and anywhere residents have questions. Congrats Scott! ($)
