The Lowdown

Northfork Bike Whisperer 🚲

Since Country Time Cycle closed in 2023, the North Fork’s been in a bit of a bike repair blackout. Unless you felt like hauling your cruiser to Hampton Bays (spoiler: no one did), you were out of luck.

Until now.

Danny Franc- part bike whisperer, part neighborhood hero, and the North Fork’s only mobile bike mechanic. He’s like Geek Squad, but for your two-wheeled best friend. Danny shows up with tools in hand and nostalgia in his heart. What he does:

• Tune-ups

• Repairs

• Restorations

• Avoids e-bikes like the plague (they're too techy)

Pricing: $45–$200, depending on what your ride needs. And yes, it’s a little more than a shop, but he comes to you.

Danny’s got deep North Fork roots skate park rides, ferry trips, and childhood tank museum visits kind of deep. These days, he’s got a growing fan base of grateful riders, and he’s doing it all for the love of bikes.

Smashburgers with a Side of Soul 🍔

Seventeen-year-old Will Burrell officially launched Will’s Smashburgers on May 31, and let’s just say, he’s flipping more than patties. He’s flipping the whole burger game.

You’ll find him slinging burgers inside Center Cuts Gourmet Butcher in Mattituck, where each order comes with something you don’t expect: a handwritten note of encouragement. It’s Will’s way of promoting mental health awareness, and yes, it’s just as wholesome as it sounds.

Oh, and part of the proceeds go to the Gary Sinise Foundation, which supports families of fallen military and first responders. Burgers that do good? We’ll take two.

Here’s when to grab one:

• Wednesdays & Thursdays: 12–5 p.m.

• Fridays: 12–6 p.m.

Bottom line: Go get a burger. Feel good. Do good. Repeat.

Kickflips & Clicks 🛹 📸

Greenport Skate Park is trading boards for shutters (well, not really) on Saturday, June 21 from 12-4 PM. It’s hosting its first-ever photography contest in honor of Go Skateboarding Day, which, yes, is a real and very rad holiday.

Here’s how it rolls:

• Snap the best portrait of a skater? That’s $500 in your pocket.

• Capture the sickest action shot? Another $500 up for grabs.

• Runners-up in both categories snag $250, still enough for some new gear or, let’s be honest, tacos.

The masterminds? Rena Wilhelm, who’s been steering the park’s renovation, and photographer Simon Velu, two creatives united by a love for skate culture and a well-timed intro.

With the usual Sound and Skate Festival on pause this year, this contest is stepping up to keep the energy alive. Whether you're behind the lens or in front of it, it’s your time to shine. ($)
