The Lowdown
Breaking Ground đ§
Big news in Mattituck! Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church is moving forward with plans for a brand-new 8,000-square-foot community center. An archaeological study gave the all-clearâno buried treasures, just a green light for construction.
The new space will include a 2,000-square-foot basement and design elements that match the churchâs classic look. Final approvals are still in the works, but if all goes smoothly, expect shovels in the ground by late summer or fall. ($)
Whoâs on the Ballot? đ
The Southold Town GOP is locked and loaded for the 2025 election, rolling out a full slate of candidates with their sights set on flipping Town Hall back to red.
Christopher Talbot and Nick Planamento are running for Town Board, with Stephanie Hall stepping up to replace longtime Fishers Island representative Louisa Evans, whoâs retiring after 30 years of service. Hall, a human geneticist and dedicated Fishers Island volunteer, is all about strengthening the islandâs connection with Southold.
The GOP is sticking with Tax Assessor Charles Sandersâwho was recently promoted to Lt. Colonel in the NY Army National Guard and will be deployed to the Middle East later this year. Real estate pro Ken Poliwoda, is filling the spot on the ticket of current Assessor, Kevin Webster, who is stepping down. Greg Schlachter, a longtime heavy equipment operator, mechanic, and the townâs beloved âSouthold Santa,â is running for Highway Superintendent, promising to keep roads and sidewalks safe. Town Clerk Denis Noncarrow is looking to hold onto his seat.
For Town Trustee, the GOP is rolling with Terri Boyle Romanelli, Nathan Andruski, and Pindar Damianos. Romanelli, a former tech exec turned North Fork advocate, warned about the dangers of overdevelopment. Andruski, a lifelong bayman, got real about the decline of local fisheries. Damianos emphasized smart growth that keeps property rights and environmental conservation in check.
