Solar Power at the Old Landfill? ☀️

Southold Town is holding a public hearing on March 10 at 5 p.m. to chat about turning the former Cutchogue landfill into a solar powerhouse. The plan? 7,900 solar panels across 20 acres, pumping out 3.06 megawatts of clean energy — all thanks to Summit Ridge Energy.

The project’s been in the works since 2020, with the battery storage part scrapped along the way. The panels will sit on concrete ballasts to keep the landfill cap intact, plus an 8-foot fence and 24/7 remote monitoring will keep everything secure.

If you’ve got thoughts on this sunshine-fueled transformation, now’s your chance to weigh in! ($)

Southold to Invasive Plants: You’re Not Invited to Cleanup Day 🚫

Heads up, Southold! As the town gears up for its annual leaf and brush pickup starting April 1, there’s one rule you can’t ignore: No invasive plants allowed.

The town is cracking down on piles of bamboo and phragmites — fast-spreading plants that wreak havoc on ecosystems and ruin compost quality.

The town wants to turn yard waste into high-quality, salable compost, but invasive species make that impossible. So, the new rule is official: Bamboo and invasive plants won’t be picked up.

If you’re wondering whether this applies to you, the town already has tabs on the worst offenders (including a massive bamboo pile in Orient). Last year, they left invasive piles untouched and waited for residents to call — turning confusion into an opportunity for education.

Moral of the story? Don’t be that neighbor. Keep invasive plants out of your yard waste, and let’s keep Southold’s compost clean and green. 🌿

Help 911 Help You 🚨

Here’s a quick way to make emergencies a little less stressful—Southold Town Police are urging residents to sign up for Smart911. It’s a free service that lets you create a profile with important details—think household members, medical info, pets, and even vehicle descriptions—so 911 operators have what they need before first responders arrive.

Police Chief Steve Grattan says this is especially helpful for cell phone calls, which don’t always provide location or background info. Riverhead PD is also on board, with Captain Danielle Willsey stressing how crucial it can be when callers can’t speak.

Bottom line? A few minutes of setup now could save critical time later. Visit Smart911.com to get started. ($)

Shellfish, Yard Sales & Easier Fee Changes 🦪

Southold just made life a little simpler. Instead of jumping through legislative hoops, the Town Board can now tweak shellfish and yard sale permit fees with a quick resolution. No more law rewrites for small changes!

Right now, shellfish permits are $5, and yard sale permits are $15 — no hikes (yet). But if they need adjusting down the line, it’s an easy fix. As Supervisor Al Krupski puts it, this change cuts out the red tape, so Southold can stay flexible. ($)
