The Lowdown

Modern Snack Bar is Turning 75 šŸŽ‰

The Aquebogue legend reopens for the season on Wednesday, May 14, and if you’ve ever been, you know why people keep coming back: old-school charm, farm-fresh everything, and that ā€œMidcentury Grandma’s Living Roomā€ interior that somehow just works.

Founded in 1950 with six stools and a dream, Modern Snack Bar is still run by the Wittmeier family and now serves fourth-generation regulars. They only open spring through fall to stay in sync with the North Fork’s harvest season, which is probably why the food tastes like home.

No gimmicks, just good food, great people, and a big dose of nostalgia. Oh, and don’t forget those famous mashed turnips (don’t ask for the recipe—you won’t get it).

BBQ Season Is On šŸ–

Meats Meat BBQ Smokehouse & Tuckers Taproom is open in Mattituck, and they didn’t just fire up the smoker, they leveled up the whole experience.

Owners Chris Hujber and pitmaster Larry Mondello (aka the Brisket Whisperer) are now fully in charge and gave the place a makeover: real plates, table service, and soon—an actual full bar. Yes, you can finally sip a cocktail with your ribs like a civilized human.

The menu still brings the heat: brisket, pulled pork, ribs, and now some newbies like fire chicken (buttermilk-smoked and deep-fried) and the PBLT (yep, bacon smoked in-house).

They’re open Fri–Sun for now, but expect more days (and more BBQ) starting in May. Follow the smoke—or just head to meatsmeat.com for details.

An Old Favorite Returns šŸ½ļø

After six long years of hammers, hope, and historic preservation, the Old Mill Inn is finally reopening its doors on Wednesday, May 7—and she’s looking better than ever.

Built in 1820 as a tidal grain mill, the Mattituck waterfront icon has lived many lives: mill, speakeasy, summer bar, and now, a beautifully restored restaurant and inn under owner Anthony Martignetti.

He didn’t just slap on some paint and call it a day. The building was literally lifted off the ground, moved, and reinforced with 67 new pilings to meet code, all while preserving century-old beams and character.

The menu, led by local chefs Kyle Bloomer and Zachary de la Cantner, blends East End pub favorites (think: fresh oysters and fish & chips) with creative dishes like fluke ceviche and Aussie sausage rolls.

Opening night dinner is Wednesday, May 7 at 5 PM. Reservations and more at oldmillnorthfork.com. ($)
