The Lowdown
50 Years of Sick Plants and Solving Mysteries šŖ“
Margery Daughtrey has been fighting plant diseases for nearly five decades, long enough to see trends (and trees) come and go. As a senior extension associate at Cornellās Long Island Horticulture Research & Extension Center, sheās basically the North Forkās plant detective.
Her career started thanks to an arborist uncle and a love of practical botany. After stops at William & Mary and UMass Amherst, she landed here, and stayed. Over the decades, sheās diagnosed everything from coleus downy mildew to dogwood anthracnose (bonus points if you can pronounce either).
She supports about 15 local nurseries and greenhouses, solving plant puzzles both in person and virtually. Her favorite part of the job? That āaha!ā moment when she figures out whatās making a leaf go rogue.

Capsized Boat Rescue šØ
Four Hampton Bays men had a brush with disaster Sunday evening when their 19-foot boat capsized off Duck Pond Point in Cutchogue.
Just before 6 p.m., Southold Police, Cutchogue Fire Department, and medics responded to the scene, finding the group clinging to the hull of their partially submerged center console about 3/8 of a mile offshore.
Enter hero Ara Araian of Passaic, NJ. Thanks to a heads-up from his passenger, Southoldās own Evan Ozdemir, Araian spotted the stranded crew and pulled all four aboard his boat before ferrying them safely to shore.
Miraculously, everyone was okay, and even turned down further medical treatment. Talk about a lucky escape.
