The Lowdown

New Birding Hot Spot 🦅

A former duck farm in Aquebogue that was once headed toward luxury condos is now officially part of New York State’s Birding Trail.

The 100 acre Broad Cove Preserve along Flanders Bay has quietly transformed into one of the North Fork’s newest nature escapes, complete with meadow trails, waterfront overlooks, benches, and native grass plantings.

During last week’s announcement, hawks circled overhead while members of North Fork Audubon pointed out Baltimore orioles, blue winged warblers, osprey, and tree swallows along the preserve’s newly improved paths.

Broad Cove is now the first of three North Fork locations expected to receive official Birding Trail designation this year, alongside Hallock State Park and Orient Beach State Park.

Recreating a Dinner From 1877 🍽️

On May 22, Léon 1909 will host a one night dinner inspired by the original 1877 Westminster Kennel Club “Best in Show” banquet menu, yes, the actual dinner tied to the earliest days of the now iconic dog show.

The idea came from Emmy winning producer and Westminster board member Amani Martin, who introduced the historic menu to the Léon team after bringing owner Valerie Mnuchin to the Westminster Dog Show earlier this year. Chef Armond Joseph immediately saw it as the kind of culinary puzzle he couldn’t resist.

Instead of recreating the heavy 19th century feast exactly as written, Joseph used it more like a blueprint, channeling the spirit of Delmonico’s chef Charles Ranhofer while filtering everything through Eastern Long Island sourcing and Léon’s style of cooking.

Future Art Barn 🎨

Behind the shops and foot traffic of Main Road in Southold sits a weathered old barn most people probably never notice. Soon, that could change.

Local builder Glenn Heidtmann and his partners are restoring the roughly 175 year old structure tucked behind Compass Realty and J. McLaughlin with plans to turn it into a working art space for local creatives.

The future “Art Barn” won’t be a gallery or retail shop. Instead, the vision is a quiet workspace where artists can escape the kitchen table setup and actually create. ($)

Boating Safety Day ⚓️

Before the shift to summer on the water mode, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Southold Flotilla is hosting a full day dedicated to making sure everyone gets through boating season safely.

On May 16, Mitchell Park in Greenport will turn into a hands on boating safety hub as part of National Safe Boating Week. From 10 AM to 3 PM, visitors can check out paddlecraft demonstrations, safety gear displays, knot-tying lessons, life ring toss activities, and free vessel safety checks happening right in Greenport Harbor.

Dock Diving Dogs 🐕

On May 16 and 17, dogs will once again go airborne at Greenport Harbor Brewing Company (Peconic) during the return of Dog Dock Diving Weekend, the event where pups sprint full speed toward a dock and absolutely send it into the water for glory, treats, and local bragging rights.

Competitions include categories like extreme vertical and speed retrieval, which is basically the canine version of the Olympics if the athletes were fueled by tennis balls and pure enthusiasm.

The brewery says the event is especially meaningful because it marks the launch of their new nonprofit arm, The Giving Tank, a newly established 501(c)(3) designed to expand the brewery’s longtime charitable efforts.

This year’s proceeds will support the North Fork Animal Welfare League.

Learning to Sail ⛵️

The Orient Yacht Club Junior Sailing Program is back for 2026, giving kids ages 8–14 the chance to learn the ropes out on the water. Beginners are welcome, and the program is built around confidence, teamwork, and sailing skills in a safe, fun setting.

Families can choose from 1, 4, or 8 week programs, depending on how much time their young sailor wants to spend at sea. There’s also a free sailing lesson on May 23 from 10 AM to noon, which is a pretty great way to test the waters before diving into summer.

A solid pick for kids who like being outside, trying something new, or casually becoming the most nautical person in the family.
