Smuggler’s Cove 🍽️
Brothers Joe and Patrick Donagher, along with Patrick’s wife, Roz, are opening Smuggler’s Cove in the former Porto Bello space on Manhanset Avenue.
The plan: surf and turf, Irish fare, homemade pasta, local oysters, produce, seafood, and meats, plus a cocktail list with some serious thought behind it.
The team has been renovating for months, adding a floating staircase, roof deck, expanded bar and a more open dining room.
A grand opening is planned for Memorial Day Weekend. Smuggler’s Cove will open from 3 PM Wednesday through Friday and 11 AM on weekends, with brunch, dinner until 9 PM and late night pub food on weekends.

NFAC Gets a Lift 🎭
The North Fork Arts Center in Greenport officially reopened its newly accessible main theater Friday, unveiling a long awaited elevator and introducing a new executive director just before the busy summer season.
The ribbon cutting marked the completion of Phase Two of renovations. The biggest addition: an elevator connecting visitors to the second floor main theater, making the largest performance space wheelchair accessible for the first time.
The theater also announced a major cultural flex: a donated Steinway Model B grand piano now waiting center stage for future concerts.
Alongside the accessibility upgrades, the latest renovation phase included long needed HVAC improvements. Earlier renovations added a new stage, surround sound system, projector and screen. Next up: plans for a second floor expansion behind the theater.
Friday also marked a leadership transition. Tony Spiridakis, who helped lead the community driven effort to save and relaunch the theater as a nonprofit arts center in 2024, is stepping into the Chairman role. Alison Omens, a Greenport resident with a background in public policy and nonprofit leadership, takes over as Executive Director.

Basso’s Next Chapter 🍷
There’s a new crew running the show at Basso, the longtime Greenport wine bar that made its return to Main Street last fall.
Chef and co-owner Nick DeCillis has officially retired, leaving partner Stephen Boscola to take the lead, with Boscola’s wife Sara behind the bar and Matt Lafemina stepping into the kitchen.
The cozy wine and charcuterie spot reopened in Greenport last September after years of bouncing between locations, pop-ups and a Mattituck stint. After a brief winter closure for renovations and a refresh, Basso reopened in April with a slightly new look and a new team dynamic.

A Different Almanac 🌱
A dinner party in Cutchogue turned into a publishing gig for Peconic farmer Peter Treiber Jr., who now writes monthly essays for The Other Almanac, a modern spin on the classic farmer’s almanac built around climate, farming and the natural world.
Treiber, co-owner of Treiber Farms, joined the publication after meeting founder Ana Ratner, who was already a fan of his farm newsletter and its quiet, observant style.
The result: short monthly entries that read somewhere between poetry, field notes and a farmer talking to himself while walking the orchard rows.
Treiber is currently the only North Fork farmer regularly contributing to the publication, which launched in 2022 as a more environmentally conscious reimagining of the traditional almanac format.
Instead of generalized weather predictions and rural folklore, The Other Almanac focuses on biodiversity, ecosystems, migrant labor, climate realities and hyperlocal agriculture.

Beach Debris Becomes Fine Art 🎨
Step inside Cindy Pease Roe’s studio at Port of Egypt Marine and it looks less like a traditional art space and more like a very organized beach cleanup.
Shelves are packed with bottle caps, rope, broken beach chairs, plastic utensils, buoys and enough marine debris to make anyone rethink a quick walk past litter on the shoreline.
For Roe, though, it’s all material.
The Greenport artist has built a career creating massive sculptures from plastics collected off local beaches, a process she calls “upsculpting.”
One of her best known works, Herman the Turtle, hangs inside Greenport Harbor Brewing Company in Peconic. Another, a 14 foot great white shark called Sugar, lives at Cape Cod National Seashore and was built entirely from debris collected along the coast.
Through her nonprofit UpSculpt, she hosts workshops, beach cleanups and public art projects focused on ocean pollution and environmental education, especially for kids.
