Back to the Bays Turns 10 🎉
Cornell Cooperative Extension’s Back to the Bays program just hit double digits, and they’re celebrating in true North Fork fashion: with local art, marine education, and a fresh bottle of rosé.
The Long Island Marine & Coastal Field Guide
Think of it as the ultimate cheat sheet for beachcombers. It’s pocket-sized, beautifully illustrated by Carolyn Munaco, and packed with 250+ local species. It’s $35 and worth every barnacle.
Rosé for the Bays
A summer-perfect blend from Borghese Vineyard. It’s light, crisp, and dressed to impress in Carolyn Munaco’s marine-themed labels. $25 a bottle and good for your taste buds and the bays, proceeds help support local conservation efforts.
Buoys for the Bays
Pick up an old fishing buoy from Borghese (now through July 10), turn it into art, and show it off at their exhibit and auction later this summer. Want help painting? Join their workshop on July 11. $20 gets you in plus a glass of rosé.

Brushstrokes & Beach Vibes 👩🎨
North Fork got a fresh coat of beauty thanks to Marilyn Utz, the cover artist of Dan’s Papers June issue. Her featured piece “Turkey Rock on Our Beach”is an oil painting inspired by the shoreline right outside her Orient front door. Talk about painting your happy place.
Marilyn’s been painting the East End since her childhood summers in Greenport, and after 45 years in Orient, she knows the land like the back of her paintbrush. Her style? Loose, flowing, and plein air (that’s French for “painting outside like a boss”). She works fast and finishes early to keep things light and fresh.
You can catch Marilyn’s work this summer at North Fork Art Collective and Aldo’s Coffee Shop. She’s one of 14 artists curated by Collective founder Kara Hoblin.

Save the Planet, Starting in Your Backyard 🌱
Poquatuck Hall was packed this past Saturday as Doug Tallamy, bug whisperer and biodiversity hero, dropped some serious knowledge in Orient. Hosted by North Fork Audubon, the standing-room-only event centered around one big idea: if we want to save nature, we’ve got to start at home, literally, in our yards.
Tallamy, didn’t sugarcoat it. Insects are disappearing fast, and if we lose them, we’re in big trouble. The UN predicts we could lose over a billion species (yep, with a B) in the next 20 years. Most of them are insects, but their loss would ripple all the way up the food chain.
So what’s the culprit? Lawns. Invasive plants. Habitat destruction.
And the fix? Ditch the grass. Plant natives. Skip the pesticides. Let leaves lie. Keep last year’s flower stems. Basically, make your yard a five-star hotel for pollinators.
His vision? A nationwide, people-powered movement called Homegrown National Park, millions of backyards working together to bring biodiversity back.
Head to homegrownnationalpark.org and start turning your yard into a haven for nature.

A Lure x Raphael Vineyards
Mark your calendars for Sunday, June 22 at 5:30 PM because A Lure is serving up a five-course wine dinner that’s basically a love letter to the North Fork.
Chef Jeff Uguil is bringing the flavor with five perfectly plated courses, each paired with pours from Raphael Vineyards, one of the North Fork’s wine MVPs. Think seasonal ingredients, serious culinary skill, and waterfront views that’ll make you want to linger long after dessert.
This one’s gonna fill up faster than a wine glass at a tasting. Reservations required. Don’t sleep on it.
