The Lowdown
Fire Fights, Beetles & Bats 🚒🪲🦇
Long Island’s wildfire playbook is getting a rewrite. With climate shifts and more people settling in, brush fires are becoming a bigger deal, and not just because of dry weather. The southern pine beetle, a tiny tree assassin first spotted in Suffolk back in 2014, is chomping through forests and upping fire risks. These guys release pheromones that basically throw a rave for more beetles, turning healthy woods into fire tinder.
Foresters are fighting back with strategic thinning to keep air moving and beetle parties from getting too wild. But it’s not that simple, enter the northern long-eared bat, an endangered species that limits when and how those chainsaws can buzz.
On the ground, firefighters are stepping up. Departments are rolling out brush trucks made for rough terrain, and the Suffolk County Fire Academy is training crews on wildfire tactics that match today’s challenges.
Bottom line? Saving the trees (and us) means juggling bugs, bats, and big flames—with a side of smart strategy. ($)
Big Splash on Paradise Point 💰
A waterfront stunner on Southold’s Paradise Point just sold for a jaw-dropping $6.725 million—making it the biggest residential sale on the North Fork so far this year.
This 2,000-square-foot brick beauty was built in 2015 and sits on 3.7 acres with its own private beach and dreamy views of Shelter Island Sound. Inside? Cathedral ceilings, a stone fireplace, a chef’s kitchen, and three en suite bedrooms. Outside? Peace, privacy, and prime waterfront vibes.
Listed in March for $6.85M, it sold off-market at 98% of asking. Scott Bennett of Douglas Elliman repped both sides of the deal.
Freshman Ace Leads Mattituck Tennis 🎾
Mattituck’s No. 1 singles spot? It belongs to a 5-foot-8 freshman named Graham O’Connor. Yep, a freshman. Coach Cory Dolson handed him the top seed, surprising even Graham, but the ninth-grader has answered with aces.
Graham picked up a racket at 8 after a trip to the U.S. Open and hasn’t looked back. Now a varsity vet since 7th grade, he’s holding a solid 5-4 record in one of the toughest leagues around. The goal this year? Crack the county’s top 8. The dream? Top 4 by senior year. ($)

Dog of The Week
Bargo is the ultimate good boy in a medium-sized package.
This 1-year-old hound mix is sweet, calm, and beautifully colored. He’s crate-trained, listens to commands, and is perfectly polite (no couch surfing unless invited!). Bargo’s not clingy but totally down for mealtime, outdoor fun, and making new furry or human friends.
He’s quiet, well-mannered in the car, and easy on the leash with a harness. Still mastering a few stairs and house-training basics, but with his crate smarts, he’s well on his way.
Neutered, vaccinated, heartworm negative—and 100% ready to be your chill companion.
Interested? Call the Southold location at 631-765-1811 ext. 1 to learn more about this four-legged gem.
