In today’s North Fork Buzz:

  • Diesel Spill

  • Movement at the Speedway

Ready, Set, Go!

Get your bearings with Douglass Marine 🚤

Looking for fun spots to anchor up this summer? Here are a few suggestions from Douglass Marine - TowBoat US Orient:

  • Coecles Harbor, Shelter Island

  • Long Beach, Orient

  • Robins Island, New Suffolk

  • West Neck Harbor, Shelter Island

  • Three Mile Harbor, East Hampton

  • Holmes Hill, Southampton

  • Fort Pond Bay, Montauk

Tips for safe anchoring:

1. Give your boat enough room to swing near other boats
2. Remember the 7 to 1 ratio for setting your anchor scope, you don’t want to drag anchor!
3. And at night, display an all around anchor light!

And as always, make sure your TowBoatUS membership is in good standing.

The Lowdown

Local Collaboration 🤝

Some of the region’s smallest businesses are getting a boost from an unexpected source: other local businesses.

At places like The Treatery in Jamesport, shelf space near the register has become a launchpad for fellow entrepreneurs. Personalized poems from Orient writer Kate Seward, crystal jewelry from Vibing High, and homemade Sicilian pasta sauce from Stefano DiBenedetto and Giovanna Russo all share space inside the bakery, with the makers keeping 100% of the profits.

For Treatery owner Christina Padrazo, it’s part marketing, part community service. After years selling baked goods from a food truck and farmers markets, she remembers how hard it was to get products in front of customers without a storefront. Now she’s paying it forward.

Farm stands, wineries, and specialty shops are creating mini marketplaces where small brands can gain visibility without the cost of opening their own retail space. The result is a local business ecosystem built more on collaboration than competition.

Diesel Spill ⚠️

A partially submerged charter boat in Mattituck Creek has triggered a diesel fuel cleanup effort involving both the Coast Guard and New York State officials.

The roughly 60 foot vessel, believed to be associated with Timothy J Open Boat Fishing, has been sitting abandoned for at least a year, according to local residents. After taking on water last week, the boat eventually partially sank at a private commercial dock, leaving a visible fuel sheen on the creek and a strong diesel odor in the air.

Cleanup crews have deployed containment boom around the vessel, while the Coast Guard and DEC work to remove any remaining diesel fuel. ($)

Movement at the Speedway ⛽️

After sitting vacant for years, the former Speedway gas station in Mattituck is finally seeing some activity.

Crews began work this week removing underground fuel tanks, gas pumps, and other fueling infrastructure.

A construction sign posted at the site features the 7-Eleven logo. The convenience store giant acquired Speedway in 2021 and has converted many former Speedway locations into 7-Eleven branded gas stations.

For now, town officials say only tank and fuel equipment removal has been approved. The small station building is staying put, and Southold Town has not received any redevelopment plans or site plan applications for the property.

Jamesport Bazaar Is Back 🎡

The Jamesport Fire Department’s 71st annual bazaar and parade returns July 14–18, bringing five days of carnival rides, games, fireworks, sausage and pepper heroes, and plenty of nostalgia to the George Young Community Center grounds.

The parade remains the centerpiece of the week, bringing together fire departments and EMS agencies from across Long Island in a celebration of the volunteers who serve their communities year round. ($)

Finding the Funny in the Hard Stuff 📚

Annabelle Gurwitch has spent decades making audiences laugh on television, radio, stage, and the page. Now, the actress, author, and satirist is bringing that same humor to one of the most difficult chapters of her life.

The Murphy Brown, Seinfeld, and Dinner & a Movie alum will visit Cutchogue on Saturday, July 11 for a reading and signing of her new memoir, The End of My Life is Killing Me: The Unexpected Joys of a Cancer Slacker, at The North Fork Apothecary.

The book chronicles a life altering stretch that began during the pandemic, when a routine COVID-era doctor visit unexpectedly led to a diagnosis of stage 4 lung cancer.

Gurwitch, who had never smoked and considered herself healthy, turned the experience into a candid and often funny exploration of resilience, friendship, aging, and what it means to live with uncertainty.
