Red Tape, No Progress 🗣️

Last week’s Village Board meeting in Greenport? Let’s just say it wasn’t boring.

Residents and business owners showed up fired up over what they see as a perfect storm of red tape, vacant storefronts, safety hazards, and zoning laws that make opening a coffee shop feel like applying to NASA.

The biggest target of the night? Greenport’s 2023 zoning code overhaul.

Example A: The Greenporter Hotel tried to add a third floor. After a year of waiting just to find out which board to talk to, they pulled the plug.

Example B: Restaurateur Matt Michel has been trying to redevelop the old Desiderio’s Pizza site since 2016. What’s in the way? Parking requirements so strict they make parallel parking look easy.

Southold’s Got Tree Drama 🌳

In Southold Town, the trees are talking. Too many homes are going up, and too many trees are coming down.

The town does have rules, kind of. Right now, developers can clear up to 75% of trees on smaller lots. But enforcement? Spotty. A new 15-page tree code was proposed last fall by Town Board member Jill Doherty. It highlights everything trees do for us: filter air, control floods, cool the planet, buffer noise, and generally keep Southold looking like Southold.

Longtime locals worry about more than just the view. They say mass tree removal erodes soil, floods roads, and chips away at the town’s rural charm.

Turns out this isn’t a new fight. Southold’s first tree code was written in 1654, after too much clear-cutting in Mattituck. That’s right, this tree debate is older than the United States. ($)
