The Lowdown

North Fork NJROTC Takes Boston by Storm ā›ˆļø

Boston brought the rain, mud, wind, and cold—but North Fork NJROTC brought the heat.

This weekend, North Fork cadets were the only Navy team to show up at the Peabody Veteran Memorial High School Raider Competition, facing off against 20 teams from the Marine Corps and Air Force JROTC. No pressure, right?

They crushed the Physical Team Test, slayed the Rope Bridge, flipped tires like pros, ran a 5K, and even handled first aid—all while battling the elements.

And the result? A shiny 2nd place trophy and a proud 4th place finish. That’s what we call mission accomplished.

Greenport’s Budget Plan šŸ’°

Greenport School District just dropped the financial equivalent of a mixtape: a $26.96 million budget proposal for the 2025–26 school year. That’s a $1.58 million glow-up from last year, but don’t worry, it still plays nice with the state’s tax cap.

Homeowners, here’s your part: if your property’s assessed at $5,450, you’re looking at an extra $196 a year. That’s roughly $16.33 a month, about the cost of forgetting to cancel one streaming service.

Where’s the money going? Glad you asked.

  • $3.54 million is earmarked for capital upgrades—think shiny new athletic facilities and better auditorium lighting for those standing ovations.

  • A whopping $20.85 million keeps current programs humming: universal pre-K, English Language Learner support, services for students with disabilities, AP exam fees, sports, clubs, and extra reading help.

  • Admin costs come in at 9.52%, so most of the cash is going where it counts—students.

Superintendent Beth Doyle says the goal is simple: give students what they need without giving taxpayers sticker shock.

Your chance to vote is Tuesday, May 20, from 2–8 PM at the ā€œDudeā€ Manwaring Gym at Greenport High.

Also on the ballot: Board President Jaime Martilotta and member Emily Whitecavage are both up for reelection. ($)
