The Lowdown

Coastal Resilience 🌊

Southold Town is taking a closer look at how its zoning update can better protect the coastline after residents pushed for coastal resilience to become a bigger priority.

Recent storms that damaged Southold Town Beach, leaving it closed to swimmers this summer helped underscore the concern. Town planners are now weighing whether to join New York State’s Climate Change Adaptation and Resiliency Plan (C-CARP), a program that helps municipalities identify vulnerable areas, develop adaptation strategies, and compete for future grant funding.

The town is also exploring partnerships with organizations like The Nature Conservancy and renewing its push toward New York's Climate Smart Communities certification, which could unlock additional funding for resilience projects.

Fundraiser for Veterans 🏒

New York Islanders forward Kyle Palmieri is bringing his charitable foundation to the North Fork for the first time with a fundraiser on Aug. 9 at Greenport Harbor Brewing Co. in Peconic.

The event will support the launch of Roger New York, a free online resource designed to help veterans and their families easily find benefits, services, and organizations they're eligible for. The long term goal is to roll the platform out across New York, starting on Long Island.

The cause is a personal one. Palmieri's family has deep military ties, and his foundation has spent more than a decade supporting veterans through hockey ticket donations, grants, and partnerships.

Remembering a Wine Pioneer 🍷

The story of Old Field Vineyard is really the story of Chris Baiz, one of the North Fork's wine pioneers whose love for his family's Southold land helped shape the region's early wine industry.

Baiz planted his first vines in 1974, becoming just the second person on the North Fork to establish a vineyard, only a year after Alex and Louisa Hargrave. What started as a passion project while he worked as a mining engineer eventually grew into Old Field Vineyard, where every vine was planted by hand and the family built a winery together over the decades.
