The Lowdown
Protocols Start Taking Shape 📋
Southold officials are putting some rules on paper for how the town responds when federal immigration enforcement operations happen locally.
The Town Board is aiming to have a draft resolution ready for its Aug. 25 meeting, covering police protocols, communication with the public and other agencies, and how quickly Town Board members are notified when something is happening.
One piece already taking shape: Southold Police would serve in a peacekeeping role during immigration raids, with the goal of de-escalating potential conflicts between residents and federal agents.
The highest ranking supervisor available would also notify the town’s police commissioners rather than waiting for word to work its way all the way up the chain of command.

Middle School Takes the Stage 🎭
Friendships, crushes, bar mitzvah planning and all the wonderfully awkward drama of being 12 are headed to the North Fork Community Theatre this weekend.
“13 the Musical” makes its NFCT debut tonight, with a cast of 20 tweens and teens from across the North Fork. The show follows 12 year old Evan Goldman as he navigates a move, new friendships and the very serious middle school business of planning the perfect bar mitzvah.
Director Nancy Magel said part of the fun is seeing young actors actually get to play characters their own age, middle school drama performed by people who understand middle school drama firsthand. ($)

Camera Drama 📹
The controversial Flock camera at Manhasset Avenue and Main Road in Greenport has been vandalized for the second time in two months, this time getting splattered with fresh red paint.
And it’s not the only camera having a rough summer. Another near the Main Street traffic circle was painted and later struck by a car, leaving tire tracks behind. That camera has since been removed. A third in Peconic was mysteriously turned away from the road before being repositioned.
Residents have raised concerns about privacy, Fourth Amendment protections and whether license plate data can be shared with outside agencies.
Police Chief Steven Grattan has defended the technology, saying officers use the cameras to investigate crimes and help locate missing people. ($)
