Upgrades Coming to Greenport š°
Greenportās century old sewer system is getting some much needed attention, along with a few of the villageās favorite places to play.
New York State Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie and Assembly Member Tommy John Schiavoni announced $2 million for Greenportās sewer system, $500,000 for parks and playgrounds, and another $150,000 for sewer infrastructure improvements.
And the $2 million may just be the start. Heastie said the Assembly will work toward securing up to $8 million more in 2027, potentially bringing the stateās sewer investment to $10 million.
Mayor Kevin Stuessi said the sewer money will help replace aging pipes, improve the treatment plant and upgrade pump stations, work that could also support more housing in and around the village.
The parks funding will keep the improvements rolling at the Third Street basketball courts, including new fencing, plantings and a mural. Money is also expected to go toward the Third Street playground and village beaches at the ends of Fifth and Sixth streets.

The Old House š
One of the North Forkās oldest houses has survived more than three centuries. Apparently, it picked up a few secrets along the way.
Cutchogueās Old House, located on the Village Green, is considered one of the countryās finest surviving examples of early English domestic architecture. While local legend once dated it to 1649, tree ring testing of its original timbers points to 1698 and 1699, though historians still debate exactly how the house got there.
The house contains signs of Colonial era ritual āmagickā meant to ward off witches, including burn marks near the fireplace, an iron horseshoe and three tiny handmade dolls called poppets discovered beneath the kitchen during a 1940 renovation. The rare dolls are still preserved and can be seen during tours today.

Playing the Boxcar š»
The Mudflats a local eight piece Americana string band will perform a free āConcert at the Boxcarā at the Railroad Museum of Long Island in Greenport on Sunday, Oct. 18 at 2 PM.
And yes, theyāre bringing the train songs.
One of the bandās more ambitious arrangements is a 10 song train medley, pieced together by fiddler Helen Hooke and rehearsed for months. The medley became an unexpected tribute to three pioneering women in American guitar music: Mother Maybelle Carter, Sister Rosetta Tharpe and Elizabeth Cotten.
The Mudflats came together during the pandemic when a group of longtime friends started playing old-time music outdoors. Since then, theyāve built a following with fiddles, banjo, mandolin, upright bass, guitars and drums

Coat Drive š§„
That first chilly morning has a way of reminding you exactly where you left your winter coat. Itās also a good reminder that not everyone has one waiting in the closet.
Throughout October, CAST is holding its Annual Coat Drive, collecting new or gently used coats and boots for neighbors across our community who could use a little extra warmth this winter.
Donations can be dropped off directly at CAST or at collection bins located throughout the North Fork and Shelter Island.
So if youāve got a coat that hasnāt seen daylight in a few winters, this might be a pretty good reason to finally give it a new home.
