The Lowdown

North Fork to Everest 🏔️

Talk about reaching new heights, Southold's own Evan Miller isn't just summiting mountains, he's practically owning the Himalayas. This guy, who started scaling stuff as a kid, just bagged two of the world's biggest baddies: Mount Everest and Mount Lhotse. Seriously impressive.

We're talking about a whole process here, permits, joining a crew, and taking it slow to get used to that crazy altitude. Even with icy patches, the notorious Khumbu ice fall, and what sounds like rush hour on the mountain, Miller and his trusty sherpa partner apparently used some "short-roping" move to zip past the crowds. After conquering Everest and soaking in the view, he didn't even wait for his blisters to heal; seven days later, he was on top of Mount Lhotse.

Now living in Florida and crushing it in commercial real estate, Miller's not done yet. Next up? He's eyeing Xixiabangma, and get this, he wants to do it without oxygen. Oh, and just for kicks, he also picked up a skydiving license. Southold breeds some seriously determined folks. ($)

Times Review Media = Award Magnet 📰

The 2025 Press Club of Long Island Awards went down June 5 at Fox Hollow in Woodbury, and Times Review Media Group walked in like a newsroom version of Taylor Swift. With wins stacked across Northforker, Southforker, The Suffolk Times, Riverhead News-Review, and Shelter Island Reporter, rumor has it they needed a U-Haul just for the hardware.

From investigative deep dives to features that make you want to buy a fishing boat and vanish to the North Fork, their team nailed it in pretty much every category.

Big love to the writers, editors, and columnists who made it all happen. Oh, and they didn’t just win local. Shoutout to the New York Press Association and Outdoor Writers Association for tossing more trophies their way. Because when you’re great, everyone notices.

Superhero Nurse Krystal 🩺

When Brittney Berry, a nurse at Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital, started showing stroke symptoms mid-shift, her coworker Krystal David didn’t hesitate. She spotted the signs, called a stroke code, and got Brittney to a private room faster than you can say "tenecteplase" (that’s the clot-busting drug, FYI). Thanks to quick teamwork and speedy treatment from Dr. Ryan Zapata, Brittney made a full recovery.

On June 4, Krystal, Dr. Zapata, and two dozen other SBELIH staffers received Life Saver Awards for their roles. But Krystal also took home something extra special: the very first Krystal Clear Award (yes, named after her). An annual shoutout for hospital heroes who act fast and think clearly under pressure.

SBELIH is now applying for official Primary Stroke Center status. That means soon, EMTs will be able to bring stroke patients straight there, no detours needed. ($)

North Fork Heads to NYC

Sip, Slurp, and Savor the North Fork 🍷🦪🌾

The James Beard Foundation is hosting a seminar that’s equal parts education, indulgence, and pure North Fork magic. Hosted at Pier 57 in NYC on Tuesday, July 15.

The Wines, Oysters, and Agriculture of the North Fork is your chance to sip, slurp, and snack your way through the region’s best, with a little help from:

🍷 Bedell Cellars – masters of wild-yeast winemaking and champions of that signature “North Fork style”
🦪 Peeko Oysters – shellfish royalty from the salty waters of Little Peconic Bay
🥕 I & Me Farm – organic, small-scale, and big on biodiversity

It’s a celebration of terroir, merroir, and the people who make the North Fork taste like nowhere else. More Info

Burgers, Barrels, and a Big Bite of the North Fork 🍔🍷

The James Beard Foundation is throwing a backyard-style bash in the big city—and the North Fork is the guest of honor. Hosted at Pier 57 in NYC on Wednesday, July 30.

Dinner: Burgers and Barrels is a four-course love letter to summer, featuring:

🍷 Sippable stunners from McCall Wines, where the grapes are happy and the farming’s sustainable
🍔 Grass-fed Wagolais™ burgers (that’s Wagyu + Charolais = beefy magic) topped with McCall’s own Irish cheddar
🍟 Legendary fries and housemade sauces from First and South, plus seafood and sides so fresh they practically still have sand on them

Proof that fries and fine wine belong together. More Info
