Saving the Waterfront š
Score one for the baymen, boaters, and fishmongers. Suffolk County just passed a first-of-its-kind law in New York designed to make sure our working waterfronts stay⦠well, working.
Hereās the deal: property owners can now apply for conservation easements that guarantee their docks, marinas, and fish houses canāt be bulldozed into mansions. To make it real, the county set aside $9.5 million in its 2026ā2028 capital plan.
A 17-member Working Waterfront Committee will oversee which spots make the cut. North Fork legislator Catherine Stark and South Fork legislator Ann Welker steered the bill through.

Sixteen months, $3 million in federal grant money, and countless promises later⦠Greenportās Mitchell Park bulkhead is still busted. A 2018 report warned it could collapse.
Mayor Kevin Stuessi has repeatedly said repairs are ājust weeks away,ā but deadlines keep slipping.
The marina isnāt just a pretty view, it brings in over 20% of the villageās revenue. Residents, trustees, and business leaders are fed up, pointing to this as just one of several stalled projects under Village Hall.
Stuessi calls the repair ācomplicatedā and swears the project could go to bid this fall. But after a year and a half of delays, the public isnāt buying it.

Hubbard Turns 150 š
Greenportās Floyd Memorial Library is throwing a birthday bash of the artistic kind. Whitney M. Hubbard: 150 Years marks the first major show of the beloved local painter in 25 years, with more than 70 of his works pulled from private collections, schools, and historical societies.
Hubbard, born in 1875, made Greenport his canvas, seascapes, village views, and portraits that still feel alive today. After an accident left him without the use of his right arm, he taught himself to paint left-handed (talk about dedication).
On view now through Nov. 10 at Floyd Memorial Library, with a birthday reception for Hubbard on Friday, September 5 from 6ā8 PM
