Zoning Shake Up āļø
Southoldās planning director Heather Lanza just dropped the newest draft of the townās comprehensive zoning update, and itās packed with changes after months of resident feedback and plenty of pushback.
Hereās the quick buzz: Southoldās new zoning draft brings back retail and restaurants to the General Business and Limited Zoning districts after public pushback on the original draft, brings back uses that had previously been missing from the draft like nursing homes and fish markets, and simplifies confusing district names to their original designations.
Farming-related add-ons now need permits, home studios and gyms get official recognition, and banks are in, though outdoor ATMs might not make the cut. Even continuing care communities got a break, moving to a simpler permit process.
Next up, the Zoning Update Advisory Committee will tackle parcel-by-parcel feedback and compile a map for the Town Board. You can check out every change (in glorious red ink) at: Southold Zoning Update. ($)

Save Mattituckās History š§
The Mattituck-Laurel Historical Society and Museums has been keeping local history alive since 1964. But without help, itās running out of time and money. Museum president Charles Gueli says the nonprofit could close in about five years unless the community steps in.
Hereās the fix: a $60,000 annual tax levy spread across roughly 4,200 homes. Translation: Just $12ā$18 a year per household. Thatās about the cost of one farm stand pie to keep five historic buildings dating back to the 1700s and 1800s standing tall in Mattituck.
If the levy fails, the state could swoop in, redistribute artifacts, and possibly even sell the property for development. Not exactly the legacy we want.
The vote is Tuesday, Oct. 21, from 2ā7 PM at the Mattituck-Cutchogue School District admin building. Want to learn more before casting your ballot? Thereās an open house Oct. 8 at 6 PM at 18200 Main Road, Mattituck. ($)
