The Lowdown
Anchors Aweigh in Cutchogue 🚤
Seventh and eighth graders at Mattituck-Cutchogue Junior/Senior High are hitting the books — and the water — for boating safety certification this week. Led by Fred Smith, former commander of the Peconic Bay Power Squadron, the course covers must-knows like safety gear and navigation rules. Considering up to 70% of these students come from boating families, it’s a perfect fit.
Plus, it wraps up with a ride on the Southold Police marine unit. Talk about hands-on learning! This program isn’t just about safety — it could be the first step to a marine career. And bonus: it checks the box for Brianna's Law, which requires safety courses for all motorized boat operators in NY. ($)
Leaving It All on the Mat 🤼
Mattituck/Greenport/Southold wrestlers gave it their all at states, but the scoreboard didn’t tell the whole story. Coach Ryan Grebe kept it real: "It didn’t go as planned." Seniors James Felakos (190 lbs) and Luca Sirico (170 lbs), plus junior Ryder Antonucci (138 lbs), took on fierce competition at Albany’s MVP Arena. Felakos wrapped up an epic career with a 37-6 record and over 100 wins. Sirico battled back from injuries to snag a county title (24-11). And Antonucci, only in his third year on the mat, finished strong at 28-14. They may not have brought home gold, but these guys are pure grit. ($)
Big Artist Energy 🎨
North Fork Contemporary is shaking things up with a new conversation series designed to dive deep into the creative mind. Their first event, “Beneath The Surface,” brought together five artists to discuss how personal history and emotion fuel their work. We’re talking painter Anne Sherwood Pundyk, sculptor Marianne Weil, multimedia artist Darlene Charneco, architect-turned-artist Allan Wexler, and filmmaker Bill Morrison—each sharing insights on everything from childhood influences to overcoming creative doubt.
Led by psychologist and co-director Barbara Horowitz, the series gives the public a behind-the-scenes look at the artistic process. The key takeaway? Stay curious, trust your instincts, and keep creating. With more of these salon-style events in the works, North Fork’s art scene just got a whole lot more interesting.
