Biotoxin Alert ⚠️
Shellfish lovers, hit pause on your shucking plans. As of April 16, the DEC has temporarily closed Jockey Creek and Town Creek in Southold to shellfish harvesting after detecting saxitoxin (a not-so-tasty marine biotoxin that can cause paralytic shellfish poisoning) in local mussels.
Blame it on the bloom, seasonal algae blooms brought on by warming waters are likely the culprits. The good news? The DEC, Suffolk County, and SUNY Stony Brook’s Gobler Lab are on it and will reopen the creeks once things clear up. In the meantime, striped bass season is in full swing, so your fishing rods are still safe. ($)
Orient Weighs In 🌾
The Tuthill family’s plan to subdivide 112 acres in Orient is stirring the pot—and the public has thoughts. The longtime local family is proposing 17 residential lots while preserving 94 acres of open space, in a move they say balances development with conservation.
But not everyone’s sold. At an April 7 public hearing, neighbors raised concerns about losing scenic views and the lack of affordable housing in the plan.
The Southold Planning Board is still reviewing the proposal, weighing the Tuthill family’s legacy with the community’s desire to keep Orient, well, Orient. ($)
