Fast Eddie 🏇🥊

If you wandered into North Fork Taps and Corks on Friday, you might’ve thought a Triple Crown winner had shown up for happy hour. Close enough, it was Ed “Fast Eddie” Schuyler, Southold’s own sportswriting legend, celebrating his induction into the National Museum of Racing’s Joe Hirsch Media Roll of Honor.

Eddie spent over 40 years covering the biggest names in horse racing and boxing for the Associated Press. We’re talking Secretariat, Seattle Slew, Affirmed, Ali, Frazier, and Tyson. If they were fast or punched hard, odds are Eddie was there ringside or trackside.

Why “Fast Eddie”? Because while everyone else hammered on typewriters, Eddie dictated stories by phone, rattling off full articles straight from his brain.

He covered every Triple Crown race from 1967–2002, ringside fights in 19 countries, and boxing at six Olympic Games. ($)

Compost, Chefs & Community ♻️👩‍🍳🤝

When the federal government froze SNAP benefits the North Fork felt it instantly. Food pantry lines stretched out the door. Families who rely on assistance woke up to empty safety nets.

But over the past few years, farmers, volunteers, chefs, and town crews have quietly built a whole new food rescue ecosystem. And on Wednesday night, at a packed Cutchogue Civic Association forum, everyone finally got to see the full picture.

Composting

Remember when composting meant a wonky bin behind the shed? Not anymore.

Southold and Riverhead now run the first municipal food scrap drop-off sites on Long Island.

In just nine months, families diverted six tons of food scraps. That gets mixed with leaves, turned into gorgeous compost, and handed right back to residents and farms.

The Food Rescuers

Food Rescue North Fork volunteers are basically the Avengers, but instead of capes they carry insulated bags. They’ve already moved 50,000+ pounds of rescued food:
-Surplus meals from restaurants
-Extra trays from hospital kitchens
-Boxes from farms

Farms Leading the Charge

Farms like Golden Acres and Krupski’s now donate surplus produce multiple times a week. Anything that can’t be eaten gets composted or fed to backyard chickens.

Restaurants Are Cooking

North Fork Shack’s Sammy Sabil was tired of seeing good food go to waste. So now, on Sundays and Mondays, he and his crew come in early to cook full meals: protein, veggie, starch, and send them straight to local families.

A New Clothing Drive 👕

Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital just kicked off something quietly powerful, a new clothing drive designed specifically for their behavioral health and addiction services patients, many of whom arrive with nothing but the clothes they’re wearing.

Here’s how it works:
-Donate new or gently used, freshly laundered shirts, pants, coats, shoes, and seasonal items.
-Socks + undergarments must be new, in the package.
-Drop them off Monday–Friday, 12–2 pm at 222 Manor Pl., Greenport.

From there, the hospital’s creative arts therapists “shop” for each patient based on what they need. ($)

Winter Farmers Market 🥕

If you thought farmers markets were a summer only sport, Greenport just proved you wrong. Last Friday, the brand-new indoor Greenport Farmers Market officially opened inside Little Creek Oyster’s annex at 216 Main St.

The market runs every Friday in November and December from noon–3 PM, which means your winter squash, fresh eggs, and holiday cookies are now just a lunch break away.

The annex, home to Little Creek’s new Hold Fast Fund, a nonprofit built to boost local small businesses, has never hosted a public event before. But judging by opening day, it’s going to see a lot of traffic. Seven local vendors packed the room, including Golden Acres, Deep Dive Farm, Treiber Farms, Fields of Dough and more.
