The Lowdown
Forked Road Press 📚
Something new is coming to the old About Food spot in Southold and it smells like rare books and possibility.
On August 1, Southold native Nicolas Amara is opening Forked Road Press, a rare and used bookstore packed with stories you won’t find at Barnes & Noble (no shade). We're talking first editions, tiny print runs, out-of-print gems, vinyl records, plus a healthy side of ephemera, posters, and art.
Amara’s book love story started in high school, but it hit full stride in Manhattan when he worked at The Mysterious Bookshop and got hooked on the rare book trade. During COVID, he brought his growing collection back home and launched Forked Road Press online.
The shop is filling the space left behind by About Food, whose beloved owner Gerard Lane passed in June. Amara’s turning the page with care and a whole lot of cool.

North Fork Kid Connect Tournament 🏀
One of Greenport’s most beloved community events is back for year five on Saturday, July 26.
The North Fork Kid Connect Basketball Tournament is taking over the Third Street Memorial Court, and it’s more than just a day of free throws and fast breaks, it’s a full-on neighborhood celebration. Think: DJs spinning, the grill sizzling, local kids lighting up the court, and halftime performances from North Fork Dance Company.
This grassroots, totally free tournament started in the 1990s thanks to the legendary Joanne “JoJo” Jackson. Her niece, Candace Hall, brought it back to life in 2021, and it’s been gaining momentum ever since.
Here’s the best part: it’s run entirely by volunteers and fueled by donations. Every T-shirt, trophy, and hamburger comes straight from the hearts of people who believe Greenport’s kids deserve something special.
So swing by, cheer loud, and support a community tradition that’s here to stay and maybe even growing into a weekend-long event soon. ($)

The Enclaves Gets More Time 🏨
The Enclaves Hotel & Restaurant, the high-end hotel project planned just off Main Road in Southold, just got the green light to keep moving... but it’s more of a yellow light for now.
The Southold Town Planning Board approved a one-year extension on the project’s existing site plan approval. That means the developers have a little more time to sort out the next steps, like getting county permits, locking in building designs, and finalizing approvals from the Health Department and NYS DOT.
If you’ve lost track (understandable), here’s the quick recap:
The Enclaves was conditionally approved in 2023
Plans include a 44-room hotel, cottages, a pool, event space, and a restaurant
It’s promised 50 full-time jobs, added tourism revenue, and more lodging options
Residents have raised concerns about traffic, water use, and changing the small-town feel ($)

Dog of The Week
Drama is a shy cattle dog mix who’s just looking for his person. He takes a little time to warm up, but once he trusts you, he’s all in: full-body tail wags, loyal companionship, and endless cuddles.
He thrives in doggy playgroups and would do best in a home where he gets plenty of outdoor time to sniff, explore, and stretch those smart little legs. He’s mostly house-trained, rarely barks, and will quietly let you know when it’s time for a walk.
Don’t let his initial shyness fool you, Drama is the kind of dog who sneaks into your heart and makes himself right at home. Once he’s settled in, he’ll try every dog bed in the house, gently play with toys, and happily curl up beside you at the end of the day.
If you have patience, kindness, and a soft spot for the ones that need a little extra time, Drama just might be your new best friend. Meet him at North Fork Animal Welfare League’s Peconic location and be ready to fall in love.

North Fork Run Club 🏃
Looking to shake up your Sunday morning? The North Fork Run Club might just be your new favorite way to do it.
Launched in June, this free community run group meets every Sunday at Mitchell Park in Greenport, with two start times: 7am (for the early birds) and 9am (for the brunch crowd). Runners can choose between a 1‑mile loop or a 5K route, and best part all paces are welcome.
The vibe? Friendly, low-pressure, and powered by endorphins (and maybe caffeine after). The goal? Build community, get moving, and celebrate the beauty of the North Fork one stride at a time.
Want to join? Just show up. Want to stay in the loop? Follow @northforkrunclub for updates and let them know you heard it from The Buzz when you do.
Nothing in this section is sponsored. They’re just fun things you need to know. I’ll always let you know when something is sponsored
