History Gets a Fresh Cast 🎭

The North Fork Community Theatre is doing something a little different this March. Instead of its usual schedule, the theater is staging the Broadway classic 1776, the Tony winning 1969 musical that dramatizes the debates leading to the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

Running March 12–29, the production reimagines the show with a gender inclusive cast, a notable shift from the original script, which featured 24 male delegates and just two female roles.

Veteran director Huck Hirsch says the goal isn’t strict historical accuracy, but a more inclusive way of telling the story. The production is framed through the imagination of a modern young girl reading about the Revolution, allowing the cast and staging to reflect a broader vision of who gets to be in the room where history happens.

Greenport School Facilities Vote 🏃

Residents in the Greenport Union Free School District will head to the polls today to vote on a $1.97 million proposal to upgrade the district’s aging athletic facilities, a project school officials say would be paid entirely from an existing capital reserve fund, meaning no property tax increase.

The plan would rebuild and resurface the school’s cinder track, add new bleachers with accessible seating, and construct a press box, concession stand, and comfort station. The project also includes locker room ceiling replacements, a new restroom building, and a 30-by-30-foot metal storage building to replace an aging wood barn.

About $1 million would remain in the reserve after the upgrades, and the fund can only be used for capital projects, not operational costs like salaries or benefits.($)

North Fork Inspires Fantasy Series 📚

Author Jen Calonita is returning to the North Fork, at least on the page, with the second installment of her fantasy series Isle of Ever.

The new book, The Curse Breaker, picks up the story of 12 year old Everly “Benny” Benedict, who’s on a mission to uncover a long lost island and break a centuries old curse tied to her family’s Greenport estate. The sequel arrives March 10, following the first book released in 2025.

Calonita drew inspiration from childhood summers spent at her grandparents’ home in Mattituck, days filled with lighthouse visits, Strawberry Festival trips, and walks along the Long Island Sound hunting for “pirate treasure.”

Those memories made their way directly into the series. Readers will recognize North Fork nods throughout the books, including places modeled after local shops, restaurants, and the East End Seaport Museum.

NFAC Renovation 🚧

The North Fork Arts Center will unveil a new ADA-compliant elevator and upgraded HVAC system this spring following a $500,000 renovation at the nearly century-old Greenport building.

A ribbon cutting celebration is set for May 15, marking both the debut of the elevator and the reopening of the upstairs theater, which has been closed during construction.

Executive director Tony Spiridakis said the project was driven by feedback from patrons. Surveys distributed at events showed the top concern was difficulty getting upstairs, especially among seniors and people with disabilities.

The second most common complaint: temperature swings in the theater. That led to a new HVAC system.

The upgrades are part of Phase 2 of renovations at the arts center. Earlier improvements included a new screen, projector, surround sound system and stage. ($)

Two Step Into Spring 🤠

Dust off those boots, Hallockville Museum Farm is hosting its first ever spring country barn dance on March 21.

The event follows a recent restoration of the farm’s Naugles Barn, which now has heating and air conditioning, opening the door for year round gatherings.

Hallockville has hosted a summer barn dance tradition for about 20 years, but organizers say the new spring edition is meant to help locals shake off the winter blues and welcome the season with some classic two stepping.

Leading the evening will be veteran square dance caller Chart Guthrie, who guides dancers through the moves with live traditional country music, no experience required. ($)
