The Lowdown

Where the Doves Fly and the Flowers Flourish 🌸🕊️

Tucked down New Suffolk Road in Cutchogue is a farm unlike any other on the North Fork. Salt Air Farm doesn’t raise chickens or ducks. Dan Heston and Prudence Wickham Heston raise white doves, yes, the kind that circle weddings and fly home before the couple finishes their first glass of bubbly.

But doves are only part of the magic. On their 135 acre property, Salt Air Farm grows countless varieties of beautiful blooms for wholesale, events, and the ever popular Bucket of Blooms CSA.

The 135-acre farm, once part of the historic Tuthill lineage, is now a floral and feathered haven framed by salt marshes and 1,500 hydrangeas. Also on-site: an 18th-century farmhouse turned farm stand, likely the largest American chestnut tree in the region, and a Civil War-era board with “Otis Tuthill” carved into it, he never returned home, but his name remains. Vintage Cinema Gets a Jazz Remix 🎥

Aquebogue artist Cliff Baldwin is throwing it way back, and fast-forwarding it at the same time. His new multimedia series at the Jamesport Meeting House pairs century-old silent films with live, off-the-cuff music from a genre-bending four-piece band.

Each night comes with a theme: one’s all about moon landings, another dives into Freud’s home movies (yes, really), and one features AI-generated films based on Baldwin’s own dream journals.

Baldwin plays sax and electronics alongside blues pianist Gail Storm, jazz bassist Iris Ornig, and drummer Rob Shepperson.

The Jamesport Meeting House, with its vintage vibes and vaulted ceilings, is the perfect backdrop for this history-meets-experimentation experience.

Sip & Swap 👗

The North Fork Environmental Council’s second annual Clothing Swap turned Borghese Vineyards into the most stylish thrift party on the East End. Guests brought 3–5 gently loved items, sipped wine, snacked on cheese, and refreshed their closets zero-waste style. Leftover goodies? Donated to CAST.

The idea came from board member Lisa Gavales, inspired by her daughter’s college dorm swaps. Just like that, the swap became a scholarship fundraiser for local high school seniors passionate about the planet. ($)

Housing, Hubs, and Hope 🏠💻

At last week’s Synergy Summit, the Southold Economic Development Committee rounded up local leaders, business owners, and civic groups to ask:
- How do we keep young people from leaving?
- How do we all stop working in silos?

Central Website

Southold needs a one-stop digital hub. Picture this, one place with:

  • A master community calendar

  • Job listings

  • Business directory

  • Housing resources

  • Tourism info

Not run by the town. Not scattered across ten platforms. Just one clean, community first site.

Housing Help

Housing costs are driving young workers out, and business owners are feeling it. Some can afford to hire, but nobody’s applying. Here’s what’s on the table:

  • Tiny homes that don’t scream “camper van”

  • Incentives for homeowners to add rentable space

  • Town-funded vouchers to help locals cover the rent gap

Let’s Sync Up

Everyone’s doing great things, but doing them alone. The fix?

  • A shared Google calendar

  • A central committee to keep everything aligned

Because solving big problems takes more than good ideas, it takes good teamwork.
