The Lowdown
A Story Worth Saluting 🇺🇸
If you head down to Southold Town Beach and something looks different, you’re not imagining things.
As of July 22, it’s now officially Lt. George Robert Sullivan Beach, renamed to honor a hometown hero whose service was nothing short of extraordinary.
Sullivan was a decorated Marine, a six-term tax receiver, a 40-year American Legion member, and yes… a diehard Mets fan. But it’s his bravery in Vietnam that earned him the Navy Cross, the second-highest military honor behind the Medal of Honor.
American Legion members, Town Board officials, and locals all came together for the ceremony. Next time you visit that beach, take a moment to remember the name and the legacy. ($)

Route 48 Is on the Edge 🌊
Let’s talk about County Route 48, aka The North Road, the scenic four-laner that barrels past vineyards and farmland before squeezing down to two lanes near Southold and Greenport. It’s beautiful, it’s essential… and it’s in trouble.
Thanks to rising sea levels and stronger storms, parts of Route 48 near Town Beach, Hashamomuck Cove, and Mattituck Creek are flooding more often, and it’s only going to get worse. By 2050, sea levels in the area are expected to rise 16 inches. By 2100? Try 34 inches. Yikes.
Suffolk County is putting $2 million into a study to figure out how to protect Route 48 before Mother Nature claims it for good.

Can You Hear Us Now? 📶
Southold just dropped a major report on wireless coverage and spoiler alert: it’s got some signal issues.
The town worked with CityScape Consultants to map out the good, the bad, and the no-bars zones across Southold. While there are 16 wireless towers (plus a few more nearby), they’re not quite cutting it.
So what’s next? Two big ideas:
Option 1: Go Big
Build taller, more powerful towers (aka macro sites) to stretch signal farther. We’re talking raising towers by 40–50 feet in some spots and possibly adding five new ones.
Option 2: Go Small & Smart
Add 28 small cell sites on utility poles around town. Less intrusive, better for targeting dead zones and ideal when big towers aren’t an option due to zoning or view preservation.
The feedback window is open for the next three weeks, you can weigh in via a survey on the town’s website. ($)

On Tuesday, July 29, the Perlman String Orchestra & Chorus heads to Southold Junior-Senior High School to show off what they’ve been cooking up during an intensive 7-week summer program led by world-renowned musicians.
Tickets are $25 for adults and free for anyone 18 and under. Snag them online or at the door.

🗣️ Southold’s Zoning Update After a tidal wave of feedback from the business community, Southold’s Town Board is rethinking a big zoning change that would've banned restaurants and shops in certain areas.

Foodie Friday 🍽
Most Fridays, we’re sharing our latest food finds, cookies, pizza, or whatever delicious thing the North Fork’s serving up. But this week? We went off-menu.
Instead of dining out, we drizzled, and dolloped our way through a condiment we’ve been hearing way too much about. Claims of “put it on anything” were tossed around. Naturally, we had to see for ourselves.
Here’s what happened when we let a little jar of magic crash our food plans.
Chili Pepp Crunch
This was our very first foray into the world of chili crisp, and Chili Pepp Crunch by Flavor Fork made it a spicy-sweet revelation.
We tested it on a few different dishes, but the standouts? A drizzle over crispy roasted potatoes and a generous spoonful on top of eggs: simple, satisfying, and seriously craveable.
Then we got fancy: avocado toast, jammy egg, and a drizzle of Chili Pepp Crunch on top. It was perfection with a kick. Let’s just say: we’re on team crunchy heat now.
This little jar is a total game changer. It’s not just spicy. It’s crunchy, smoky, umami packed, and just sweet enough to make you keep dipping your spoon in.
Texture: Fried shallots and garlic give it that addictive crunch
Flavor: There’s a warm chili heat, but it’s rounded out with coconut aminos, mushroom powder, and coconut sugar. That means it hits salty, sweet, savory, and spicy in one perfect bite.
What makes it even better? It’s all crafted by chef Sarah Mastracco, with clean, real ingredients (she clearly knows what she’s doing.)
