The Lowdown

North Fork Honors 9/11 Heroes 🇺🇸

Last Thursday, Jean Cochran Park turned into a sea of red, white, and blue as 2,977 flags were planted, one for every life lost on 9/11.

Firefighters from every corner of the North Fork gathered to lay wreaths and pay their respects.

Greenport’s crew even made the annual 6-mile hike in full turnout gear from their firehouse to the ceremony.

Southold Town Supervisor Al Krupski reminded everyone that 9/11 was “a planned, deliberate attack on democracy” and that our job now is to pass on the example of courage, unity, and hope to the next generation.

Whistler Ave Showdown 🏠

The Fishers Island Ferry District just lost round one in its $2M battle with Southold Town over a four-bedroom house at 357 Whistler Ave.

A state Supreme Court judge denied the ferry district’s request for an injunction that would’ve kicked Southold police out of the home.

Here’s the backstory:

  • The house is town-owned (bought in 1984) but had been managed by the ferry district, which spent $147K renovating it and planned to rent it to the Hay Harbor Club.

  • In December 2024, Southold revoked the district’s control, saying the property was urgently needed to house police after state troopers bailed on Fishers Island.

  • The district changed the locks. Police cut them. And moved in.

Southold says it acted lawfully, even paying the 2025 property taxes and offering to reimburse renovation costs (no receipts were ever provided). For now, cops are staying put, and the lawsuit continues.
