Peconic Star Comeback 🚢
Don’t call it a comeback, but it’s starting to look like one.
Just a month after Greenport’s Peconic Star Fleet declared it was “out of business” and blamed the Village for refusing to renew its lease, there’s been a plot twist. Owner Arnold Hubert is now in quiet talks with the Village of Greenport and the East End Seaport Museum to renew the fleet’s two five-year dock licenses at the Railroad Dock.
One of the fleet’s two boats has already been sold, and the other is getting a tune-up in Sayville. If Hubert adds another vessel before the current deal expires in May, the Peconic Star could keep both licenses.
If not? The extra spot goes to another operator, and apparently, there’s already some interest. ($)

Greenport’s Getting Spooky 🎃
This Saturday, Oct. 25, Greenport’s trading in its seaside charm for something a little more spirited. The Greenport BID’s 6th Annual Halloween Village is back, and it’s packing a full day of tricks, treats, and just the right amount of terror.
The Annual Greenport Halloween Parade kicks off at 11 AM at Floyd Memorial Library. Follow the Greenport Fire Department’s decked-out fire truck and the North Fork Academy of Dance as they shimmy down Main and Front Streets to Mitchell Park.
From 12-3 PM., local shops will be handing out treats, and thanks to the Teal Pumpkin Project, there’ll be allergy-friendly and low-sugar options too. While you’re out there, join the “Bats, Black Cats & Things That Go Bump in the Night” scavenger hunt.
At 1:30 PM, “Lizzie Borden” will be spinning her axe-wielding tale in the Blue Duck Courtyard. (Not for the little ones, maybe stick to cookies instead.)
Catch Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit at the North Fork Arts Center’s Sapon Theater at 2 PM.
And of course, Greenport’s restaurants and bars are conjuring up all kinds of Halloween-themed bites and brews for ghouls big and small.

Mattituck Seniors Hit the Beach 🌊
Forget study hall, the Mattituck Class of 2025 spent Senior Service Day doing something way cooler. A dozen seniors traded Chromebooks for buckets and hit Breakwater Beach to clean up nearly 250 pounds of marine debris (yes, 250!).
With help from the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society, teacher Al Capolongo, and Kris Melvin of the Turtleback Conservation Center, the crew pulled everything from a tire to a 100-pound wooden frame off the sand.
The Mattituck Park District fueled the effort with donuts and coffee (MVP move), while other seniors volunteered around town, at Sang Lee Farms, Group for the East End, CAST, the Southold Town Animal Shelter, and the public library. ($)

Fire Fighter’s Back in Greenport 🚢
Greenport’s got a hero back in the harbor. The retired FDNY fireboat Fire Fighter, once minutes from being scrapped has dropped anchor at Mitchell Park’s East Pier for the winter (and will stick around through Memorial Day 2026).
Launched in 1938, Fire Fighter spent 72 years saving lives and battling blazes, including the Sept. 11 attacks, when she helped pump Hudson River water to fight the fires at Ground Zero.
Volunteers like Rob O’Brien and Larry Hall are leading weekend tours, and telling jaw-dropping stories. Even cooler? The crew recently uncovered Fire Fighter’s original logbooks, packed with decades of FDNY history.
Want to hop aboard or lend a hand? Follow the Fire Fighter Museum’s Facebook page for tour times, volunteer opportunities, and ways to keep this piece of history afloat.
