The Lowdown

Running for Gavyn 🏃

Seventeen year old Gavyn Drago loved running the 5K at Orient Beach State Park. The flat course was a favorite, and every year he showed up looking to shave a little more time off his personal best.

So when the race moved to Riverhead, Gavyn wasn’t exactly subtle about his disappointment. He even threatened to boycott it.

Now, just weeks after the Mattituck High School senior’s death on Sept. 4, his family is bringing his favorite race back to Orient, this time in his name.

Gavyn’s Favorite 5K will take place Sunday, Oct. 18 at 9 AM at Orient Beach State Park, with a virtual option available for anyone who can’t make it in person.

Proceeds will benefit the newly created Gavyn Avery Drago Foundation, supporting epilepsy research, treatment advancements and teenagers living with the condition. ($)

Better Bars Are Coming 📶

Southold Town’s years long effort to improve spotty cell service is finally moving from maps and meetings to actual infrastructure.

Several new cell towers are in the works, including proposed sites in northern Mattituck, the Cutchogue and Southold fire districts, and near Greenport. Verizon is also proposing Southold’s first network of “small cells” smaller antennas primarily mounted to utility poles that can fill coverage gaps without adding a full size tower.

The town is also exploring ways to get more out of existing towers, including increasing the height of the tower at the Southold Animal Shelter and potentially doing the same on Hortons Lane.

There aren’t firm timelines yet, and some projects will still need public hearings.

Last Duck Farm Returns 🦆

Nearly two years after a bird flu outbreak threatened to end more than a century of Long Island farming history, Crescent Duck Farm is officially back

The Aquebogue farm, the last commercial duck farm on Long Island, lost its entire flock of roughly 99,000 ducks to avian influenza in January 2025. Operations stopped, employees were laid off and the farm faced a very real possibility that 117 years of raising ducks could be over.

Owner Doug Corwin wasn’t quite ready for that ending.

The farm managed to save some eggs, hatch ducklings off-site and slowly rebuild its breeding stock. After 19 months of cleaning, testing, fundraising, rebuilding and some help from Miloski’s Poultry Farm in Calverton, Crescent returned to full-scale production on Aug. 31 and has begun rehiring employees.

It’s also the comeback of an industry that was once synonymous with Long Island. At its peak, the Island had as many as 99 duck farms and produced up to half of the country’s duck meat.

45^th Hallockville Country Fair

The Hallockville Country Fair Saturday, October 3 and Sunday, October 4, delivers more family fun than you can fit onto a hay field.

New activities include a scarecrow making contest, farm animal experiences, costume photos ops and Indigenous Peoples presentations. Also on tap are LIAPA tractor pulls, living history events, craft demos and vendors, children’s activities, wagon rides, live music, food trucks and more.

Adult admission is $12, kids 5-12 are $8, and children under 4 are free. Half price admission on Sunday morning. Hallockville Museum Farm is located at 6038 Sound Ave., Riverhead.

Meet Travis 🐾

Meet Travis. Some dogs want a quiet spot on the couch. Travis would like to know what we’re doing today, where we’re going, and whether he should bring his favorite tug toy.

This 3 year old, big hearted boy is smart, athletic, playful, and happiest when he gets to do life alongside his person. He knows his basic commands, loves to train, is highly toy motivated, and takes a good game of tug very seriously. And if your summer plans involve a pool? Even better. Travis is a certified water enthusiast who would happily spend most of the day splashing around.

Travis is dog social and thrives with structure, consistency, and plenty of ways to put that busy brain and energy to good use. Most of all, he bonds hard with his people. He’s the kind of dog who doesn’t just want to hang out with you, he’d prefer to be involved in absolutely everything you’re doing.

Travis is ready to trade all the waiting for adventures, tug of war tournaments, pool days, and a person to call his own.
