The Lowdown
Town Beach Sidelined for Summer šļø
After a rough winter did serious damage to the parking lot at Lt. George R. Sullivan Beach (Southold Town Beach), the town has decided it wonāt operate as a lifeguarded bathing beach this summer.
Officials say erosion has made conditions unsafe, with concerns that county inspectors could shut the beach down or issue fines if it opened as usual.
Recreation Supervisor Janet Douglass didnāt mince words, warning that even areas that look stable may have hidden hazards beneath the sand. Moving the swim zone isnāt a viable fix, and temporary solutions used in the past have already proven ineffective.
Town leaders are leaning toward fully closing the beach for the season, including bathrooms and staffing, both for safety and liability reasons.

The State of Mattituck Dinner š£ļø
At this yearās āState of Mattituckā dinner, the message was pretty clear: everything is getting busier, more complicated, or both.
From record emergency calls to infrastructure headaches and environmental pressures, local officials painted a picture of a town being pulled in a lot of directions at once.
One of the biggest curveballs? A major cyberattack over the past year that forced the town to rethink how it handles emergency management, now shifted under the police department for tighter coordination.
Public safety demand is also climbing fast. Southold Police logged nearly 20,000 calls last year, while Mattituck firefighters responded to a record 735 alarms. More calls, more pressure, same need to keep up.
On the environmental front, the town is pushing water conservation (lawn irrigation alone makes up about 70% of summer usage), while also navigating bigger questions around coastal resilience and rising flood risks, including a new flood map in the works.
Looking ahead, thereās no shortage of moving pieces: zoning updates entering year four, expiring development moratoriums, debates over state control of land use, and a continued push for better communication with residents.
Meanwhile, schools are bracing for declining enrollment, the LIRR could use more trains out here, and local leaders are trying to protect farmland, water quality, and what makes the North Fork feel like the North Fork in the first place.

Neighborhood Showdown š
A proposed 6,000 hen egg farm in Southold is turning into a full blown standoff between a would be farmer and his future neighbors.
The plan, led by NYU student Grant Callahan, would bring a pasture raised egg operation to 16 acres of protected farmland off Ackerly Pond Road. Because the land is zoned for agriculture, farming itself is allowed, but a proposed barn triggered Planning Board review.
Neighbors from Jasmine Lane have been pushing back hard, raising concerns about odors, noise, traffic, vermin, and overall quality of life. Theyāve shown up at multiple Town and Planning Board meetings, only to be told much of what theyāre worried about isnāt something the board can regulate.
Thatās because many of those issues fall under state and federal agricultural rules, and New Yorkās Right to Farm law offers farmers broad protection from complaints tied to normal operations.
The farm itself wouldnāt be a public facing operation. No farmstand, no onmsite processing. Chickens would rotate through mobile shelters across the property, while the barn would mainly handle egg washing, storage, and supplies.
At a recent work session, tensions boiled over. Residents interrupted the meeting, shouted at officials, and directed anger at the applicant, frustrated by what they see as a process that isnāt hearing them.
For now, the project moves forward, with more review ahead and no signs of the temperature cooling down anytime soon.

The Voice Behind Your Morning Drive šļø
If your mornings have a certain rhythm to them, thereās a good chance Gianna Volpe has something to do with it.
Since 2019, her show Heart of the East End on WLIW-FM has become a steady mix of local voices and wide ranging music, the kind of program where a shellfish farmer, a doctor, and a lighthouse keeper might all share the same airtime in a single week.
Volpe didnāt come in cold. She built her chops across East End newsrooms and that reporting background still shows up in how she interviews: curious, detailed, and always chasing a good origin story.
The show itself has grown alongside the station. After The WNET Group acquired the station, local programming stayed front and center, and Volpeās morning slot kept expanding its reach.
In 2025 alone, she interviewed more than 600 guests. Not just people, either, a few dogs and even a chicken named Flower made it on air.
