Fermentation Nation 🥒
From kefir in Russia to kimchi in Korea, fermentation has been quietly transforming food for thousands of years, and now it’s having a full circle moment on the North Fork
At its core, fermentation is controlled breakdown. Microorganisms like yeast and bacteria consume sugars, creating everything from wine and sourdough to sauerkraut and pickles.
Health researchers, including the Stanford Medicine Nutrition Studies Research Group, suggest fermented foods may increase gut microbiome diversity and reduce inflammation
In Jamesport, Fields of Dough builds every loaf from a house-made sourdough starter of organic flour and water. The long fermentation process develops lactic acid bacteria, deeper flavor, better texture and a loaf that’s easier to digest
Across the Fork, chefs are getting creative. Barrow Food House keeps carrot kimchi on the menu year-round. Ellen’s on Front recently added kimcheese mini gnocchi, a mashup of Italian comfort and Korean heat. Even Bruce & Son flirted with a Brussels sprout kimchi grilled cheese.

A Writers Retreat ✍️
The Inspired Life: A Two-Day Creative Writers Retreat lands at The Shoals on March 6 and 7, hosted by Kristen Oliveri, founder and CEO of Wealth Reimagined.
Designed for writers, founders, storytellers and creators, the retreat blends real structure with actual breathing room.
Day one leans into presence and possibility. Check in mid-afternoon, ease into light refreshments, and open with a grounding writing exercise. A fireside chat with a guest author, followed by a workshop called “Finding the Thread” a prompt-driven session built to surface your core story. Breakout circles and a relaxed “Wine + Words Hour” keep the momentum going into the evening.
Day two turns practical. A flow building writing activation, then a workshop focused on converting inspiration into output, rhythm, organization, momentum. Small-group accountability conversations follow. Lunch transitions into open writing time. The weekend closes with personal commitments shared in a final circle.

Local Spotlight
Calling All Parade Participants 🇺🇸
Start brainstorming your float now, Southold is getting ready to go big for America’s 250th birthday.
The Southold Village merchants, together with the Southold American Legion, are officially looking for participants for this year’s Fourth of July parade, stepping off Saturday, July 4 at 12 PM in Southold.
Floats, marching bands, community groups, local businesses, civic organizations, if you’ve got something that rolls, marches, or waves a flag with enthusiasm, you’re invited to be part of the celebration. Organizers are aiming to make this milestone year feel extra memorable, with a parade that’s full, and festive.
Because let’s be honest: watching from the curb is fun, but being in the parade? That’s where the real bragging rights live.
