The Lowdown

State of Southold 🏛️

Southold Supervisor Al Krupski had plenty to cover during Thursday night’s State of the Town address at Peconic Landing: immigration enforcement, housing, cybersecurity, deer, water conservation and coastal flooding all made the list.

One of the biggest updates involved ICE. Krupski said Police Chief Steven Grattan and the town attorney are working on a formal procedure for when outside agencies conduct operations in Southold.

Housing is getting another look, too. After shifting away from a sweeping zoning overhaul, the town is now focusing its update more specifically on housing and has appointed Andrea Sullivan to coordinate the effort.

Cybersecurity remains very much on the radar after last November’s attack knocked town systems offline and left the public records portal unavailable for nearly seven months.

Longer term, the town is looking at raising County Road 48 and the Town Beach parking lot as part of a coastal resiliency project, while Krupski said water conservation needs to play a larger role in conversations about the proposed North Fork pipeline. ($)

Mattituck Parks: Take Two 💰

A year after Mattituck Park District voters shot down a proposed 28% tax hike, the district is coming back with a smaller number: roughly 10%.

The proposed 2027 budget would raise $720,000 through property taxes, up from about $655,000 this year. For the average property owner, district officials estimate that works out to about $16.25 more per year or $1.38 a month.

So where would the extra money go?

The district manages nine properties totaling about 63 acres, and its list includes playground repairs at Breakwater Beach and Veterans Beach Park, work at Sabat Park, parking lot repairs, athletic field improvements, upgrades to Bailie Beach Lodge and repairs to Love Lane Dock and other waterfront facilities.
