Fire Fighter Returns to Greenport 🚢
The legendary FDNY fireboat Fire Fighter is making a port call in Greenport September 11–30.
If the name rings a bell, it should, this National Historic Landmark pumped water for three straight weeks at Ground Zero after 9/11.
She’s no stranger to the North Fork either. From 2013 to 2020, the vessel called Greenport home, tied up at the commercial dock until the pandemic and rising costs sent her to Mystic Seaport.
Now she’s back. You’ll find her at Mitchell Park Marina’s East Pier, right behind Aldo’s Coffee. Tours and programming are on deck all month.

No Friday Night Lights in Greenport 🏈
Bad news for Porter Nation: there will be no varsity football on the North Fork this fall.
Low roster numbers, just 16 players total, including freshmen and sophomores not ready for varsity, made the season unsafe to play.
It stings even more after last year’s high point: a 4–4 record and the program’s first playoff berth in 11 years.
There will be football in Greenport, just at the JV level. Players will suit up to host Southampton September 17. Head coach Tim McArdle and his staff will coach the JV and junior high teams, hoping to rebuild a full varsity squad in the years ahead. ($)

Farming Flavor in the Peconic 🦪
If you’ve ever grabbed a cold bag of oysters from the little cedar stand on Route 48, you’ve already met Matt Ketcham’s work. He’s the farmer behind Peconic Gold Oysters, and his philosophy is simple: an oyster should taste like the water it grew up in.
Ketcham raises close to a million oysters a year in Cutchogue Harbor. Some end up at restaurants, some ship down to the city, and plenty move straight from his always-open farm stand cooler into your kitchens.
The grind is real, hauling cages before winter ice hits, holding inventory through slow autumns, but community support has kept Peconic Gold thriving.

Local Spotlight
Plant Sale 🌿
If your yard has been begging for a little love, this is your chance to make it happen. The North Fork Audubon Society is hosting its annual Fall Native Plant Sale on Saturday September 13 & Sunday, September 14. We’re talking more than 60 species of native plants, all locally grown.
That means drought-tolerant plants that can handle a dry summer, deer-resistant varieties that won’t turn into a midnight snack, and pollinator-friendly picks that make bees, butterflies, and birds feel right at home.
Just stop by, shop, and leave with plants that are ready to thrive.
