Lace Up for a Great Cause 🏃‍♀️

Lace up, North Fork! The ELIH Foundation’s 9th Annual 5K Family Walk-Run is back and this year, it’s at a new spot: Indian Island County Park. On Sunday, September 14, get ready to run, walk, or stroll in support of your community hospital’s Behavioral Health Services.

Whether you’re a runner chasing a PR, a walker out for fresh air, or a family pushing strollers and cheering on the kids, this event is all about coming together for a cause that matters.

9/11 Remembrance 🇺🇸

This Thursday marks 24 years since the September 11 attacks, and communities across the East End are pausing to honor the nearly 3,000 lives lost.

In Southold, the Town Fire Chiefs’ Council will gather at Jean Cochran Park in Peconic. Starting at 5 PM (ceremony at 6), the park will be lined with 2,977 American flags placed by the Southold 9/11 Memorial Committee and community members. Firefighters from across the North Fork will join together to lay wreaths and pay their respects.

Other towns are holding tributes too:

  • Riverhead hosts a 10 AM prayer ceremony at the World Trade Center Memorial Park in Calverton, plus a 6 p.m. Candlelight Walk from Marine Street in Reeves Park to honor fallen FDNY firefighter Thomas Kelly.

  • East Hampton’s Fire Chiefs Association holds its annual service at Hook Mill at 6 PM

  • Southampton has already planted 343 flags in Hampton Bays for the FDNY firefighters lost, and fire departments across town will sound their horns and sirens between 8:46 and 10:28 AM to mark the tragic timeline.

From flags to sirens to candlelight walks, every community has its own way of remembering. Together, they remind us that while 9/11 was one of our darkest days, the light of unity still shines strong on the East End.

Harbor Pet Spotlight 🐾

Since 2015, Harbor Pet has been the place where Greenport’s pets and their people get spoiled. Owners Kim Loper and Andrew LoMonaco turned a historic Main Street building into a full-on pet paradise: think grooming, boarding, top-notch nutrition advice, and their own bakery, Life Is Grruff.

Their secret ingredient? Spent grains from local breweries. Instead of going to waste, they’re dehydrated, milled, and baked into the shop’s famous “Growlers” dog treats (get it? 🐶🍺).

Because they love Greenport as much as your golden retriever loves tennis balls, they throw events like the North Fork Dock Diving Weekend, raising $14K this year for the skate park + fire department. Next year marks the 10th anniversary, and rumor has it the contests will be bigger, splashier, and furrier than ever.

Dog of The Week

Meet Vanta, her story starts with a Good Samaritan who found her wandering as a stray. At first, this Cane Corso beauty can be shy and cautious, but give her a little time and she blossoms into the happiest, wiggliest pup around. Now she’s ready to trade in the shelter life for a forever home where she can finally settle in and shine.

She’s freshly spayed, up to date on vaccines, microchipped, and heartworm negative, so she’s good to go. Vanta is a total sweetheart who loves people, but she’ll thrive best as the only dog in the house or with a calm canine companion. One thing’s for sure, no cats, please.

You can find Vanta at the Riverhead shelter, 324 Church Lane. Call 631-765-1811 ext. 2 to schedule your meet and greet.

Trivia Time 🧠

Your brain deserves more than scrolling and skimming. Each week we’ll hit you with one question designed to make you pause, scratch your head, and maybe argue with whoever’s sitting next to you. Think of it as a quick mental pit stop: a chance to flex your random knowledge, test your memory, or finally use that obscure fact you learned in 7th grade.

What was the highest-grossing movie of the 1980s?

Answer: Video Killed the Radio Star - The Buggles

65% of you got it right, and basically earned honorary “I want my MTV” pins.
