The Lowdown

History on the Water 🛳️

Bug Light Cruises are back, and the first one sets sail this Saturday, June 28.

Hop aboard with the East End Seaport Museum for a two-hour adventure to Bug Light, one of the East End’s most iconic offshore lighthouses. You'll enjoy a breezy 20 minute boat ride each way, an hour to explore the lighthouse, and plenty of time to soak in the sea air (and your own snacks, coolers welcome).

Bug Light isn’t just a pretty beacon, it’s a symbol of our maritime heritage. The museum maintains the structure, the Coast Guard keeps the light shining, and your ticket helps fund much-needed renovations.

Once there, you’ll hear wild, wonderful stories straight from the family of a former lighthouse keeper. Your guide will share tales from Bob Allen, whose great-grandfather William H. Follett kept the light burning from 1912 to 1940.

There’s nothing like golden hour on the water with history all around you.

Congressional Icon Comes to Southold 🇺🇸

Mark your calendars for Sunday, July 8 at 7 PM because Elizabeth “Liz” Holtzman, is coming to speak at the Unitarian Universalists of Southold (51900 Main Road). Her talk, “Congressional Guardrails From Nixon to Now,” is co-sponsored by the North Fork Action Center.

In case you missed civics class: Holtzman at the time was the youngest woman ever elected to Congress (at age 31) and played a key role in the Watergate hearings, voting to impeach Nixon and questioning Ford’s pardon.

Since then she has been: leading immigration policy, advocating for women’s rights, pushing for constitutional equality, bringing Nazi war criminals to justice, and breaking barriers as New York City’s first female District Attorney and only female Comptroller. ($)
