Strawberries & Standing Ovations 🍓
The 70th Annual Mattituck Lions Club Strawberry Festival is off to a berry sweet start.
Opening night featured the community-favorite Talent Show, where 12 finalists took the stage in two age groups: "Inspired" (15 and under) and "Sassy" (16 and up). The stakes? $1,000 for first place and $500 for second. Not bad for a night of fun.
Inspired (15 & under)
🥇 Alexander Balenzuela – Took home first with a heartfelt Mexican ballad about living life to the fullest.
🥈 Cali Constantino – Won second for a charming performance of “Naughty” from Matilda: The Musical, complete with a British accent.
Sassy (16 & up)
🥇 Lethal Force – Rocked the crowd with an electrifying performance, leaping off the stage and into the audience.
🥈 Nicolas Torres – Delivered a powerful cover of The Great Pretender that wowed the judges.
Thursday night kept the momentum going with Hulling Night, aka strawberry-prep party. The festival runs through Father’s Day, with carnival rides, shortcake eating contests, fireworks, food, vendors, live music, and enough strawberries to turn your fingers red.

Buried Alive on 9/11 🇺🇸
Retired FDNY Lt. Joseph Torrillo brought a packed house to silence at the Southold American Legion, sharing the story of how he barely survived the collapse of both Twin Towers.
Torrillo was scheduled for a press conference in midtown Manhattan the morning of 9/11, but instead rushed to his old firehouse near the South Tower. Minutes later, the building came down around him.
Crushed by debris, bleeding internally, and buried in darkness, Torrillo said his final prayers. But fate had other plans. He survived not one, but two tower collapses.
Now, he tells his story not just to remember the 343 firefighters who didn’t make it, but to bring hope, and purpose to others.

Foodie Friday 🍽
If you’re hunting for a top-notch lunch spot on the North Fork, look no further than 8 Hands Farm and Fyr & Salt in Cutchogue.
This family-run, fully regenerative farm is home to some seriously happy cows, lambs, goats, pigs, and poultry, not to mention piles of fresh organic produce.
Just steps away, Fyr & Salt fires up the grill, turning out seasonal dishes that stick with you long after you’re done eating. Trust us, if you haven’t been yet, it’s time to make this your next stop.

First, the vibe: picnic tables, barn charm, and real grazing animals just feet away. It’s North Fork perfection.
Now the food, honestly, everything we’ve tried has been nothing short of outstanding. The egg sandwich? A game-changer with lamb, potato, and pickled red onion on sourdough. Definitely not your average bacon, egg & cheese. And if the Mortadella sandwich is on the board, don’t walk RUN and get it.
Save room for dessert because their vanilla custard is anything but basic, rich, creamy, and just right. Plus, rhubarb season is here which means their sorbet is tart, refreshing, and worth every spoonful.
Oh, and huge props to their butcher and market crew who went above and beyond by hooking us up with beef marrow bones for our 10-month-old.
Trust us, you can’t go wrong here.
Nothing in this section is sponsored. They’re just fun things you need to know. I’ll always let you know when something is sponsored
