The Lowdown
Scott Tyler Passes the Wrench 🔧
After nearly 40 years of keeping Mattituck running, Scott Tyler is hanging up his coveralls. He just sold Scott Tyler Automotive to Bobby and Diana Kehl, the family behind All Power Performance in Cutchogue.
Tyler opened his garage back in ’86 with his uncle and has been a Main Road staple ever since. For him, this was about more than selling a business, it was about finding someone who’d take care of his customers like he did.
Enter the Kehls: North Fork locals, parents of three, and car people through and through. Bobby’s been in the industry since high school and has built a loyal following on both forks, and plans to keep Tyler’s staff. ($)

STR Showdown: Final Lap 🏠
Another public hearing is in the books, Greenport officially closed comments on its new short-term rental (STR) code Thursday night. Next stop: discussion at the Oct. 16 work session and then (finally) a vote.
The room was split:
Pro-code crowd: Says neighborhoods are turning into revolving-door hotels and year-round housing needs protection. Trustee Mary Bess Phillips called for enforcement, and Zoning Chair John Saladino said studies show these laws work.
Against-code crowd: Worried about losing rental income and tourist dollars. One resident said STRs are the only reason he can afford to live in Greenport. Another pointed out $5K fines are bigger than DWI penalties.
Meanwhile, Southold punted its own STR draft discussion, the Sept. 30 code committee meeting is cancelled.

Bulkhead Blues, Finally Fixed? 🚧
Greenport’s trustees aren’t waiting around anymore. At last Thursday’s meeting, they pushed through three surprise resolutions to finally get the Mitchell Park bulkhead and railroad dock repairs moving.
What they approved:
Move the electrical box to avoid failure (the North Ferry terminal could lose power if it goes out).
Get emergency DEC renewal permits and fresh engineering plans.
Make the mayor and consultants get the paperwork done to unlock that $3M federal grant.
Bottom line: The bulkhead, built in the ’90s and past its 20-year lifespan, might finally get the love it needs, before it literally falls into the harbor. ($)

Barns, Bright Colors 🎨
Carol C. Young is Dan’s Papers North Fork’s latest cover artist and the woman turning barns into technicolor dreams. Her cover piece Hot Pink started with a simple Cutchogue barn, but Carol cranked up the color to capture the magic of that East End light.
Carol’s North Fork love story started back in the ’70s, when her parents bought a Jamesport cottage. Summers on the farm-lined roads hooked her, and today she and her husband have their own spot here.
But here’s the twist: Carol didn’t always paint for a living. She was a senior creative director in shopper marketing (think big job, lots of meetings). Eventually, she traded PowerPoints for paintbrushes, built a studio over her garage, and never looked back.
Her style? Bold, colorful, and obsessed with barns and cottages before they vanish forever.
