The Lowdown
Peace Pole đ
On a stretch of lawn between the garden beds and tennis courts, Greenport students carved out something a little different.
The high schoolâs Interact Club, with a boost from the Greenport Rotary, spent the past year bringing a peace pole to campus. It now stands planted with a simple message: âMay Peace Prevail on Earth.â
Elementary students added hand painted rocks in bright colors and handwritten notes. Itâs one pole. One patch of grass. But tied into a much bigger idea. ($)

Table Sparks a Code Clash âïž
Sharon Sailor, co-owner of Front Street Station, was recently issued a code violation that could lead to fines starting at $500 and escalating into the thousands if the âfree stuffâ table isnât taken down. Sheâs not budging.
The table started during COVID, when charities werenât accepting donations. What began as a simple way to pass along leftover items quickly turned into a full-on community exchange.
Some nearby business owners have complained, and the village says the setup doesnât comply with code. Others, including local officials, admit itâs a gray area, technically not allowed, but also not quite like anything else on the books.
Sailor sees it differently. To her, itâs about helping people and keeping usable goods out of the trash. Even as she deals with ongoing issues in the area, she says sheâs not turning her back on the people who rely on it.

Local Spotlight
Bettyâs Boutique Going Digital đ
Some yard sales you forget about by the next weekend, and then there are the ones people keep talking about.
Thatâs the spirit behind Bettyâs Boutique, Mattituckâs longtime fundraising sale for the North Fork Animal Welfare League, which is now getting a second life online. It was started by Marja Ames, an animal lover who built the entire effort in honor of her cat, Betty. These days, Noel (aka Weekend Dog Dad) is helping bring it into the digital world as an online shop and auction.
The site is still being built, but you can already sign up at bettysboutiquecharity.com to get notified when it launches.
Theyâre also accepting quality preloved donations, clothing, accessories, housewares, collectibles, all the good stuff youâd hope to stumble upon in person. Itâs a good excuse to clean out the closet, find a second life for something lovely, and help local animals at the same time.
