Holiday Cheer Starts Here 🎄

If you’re looking for the North Fork version of the North Pole, you’ll find it in Cutchogue at Santa’s Christmas Tree Farm.

28 acres of evergreens and twinkling lights are waiting to turn your weekend into a Hallmark movie. Established in 1979, this place has been growing Christmas memories for generations.

Right now, the Gift Shop is open seven days a week, packed with everything merry and bright, from ornaments and garlands to cozy home dĂ©cor, toys, and gifts that’ll make even the Grinch crack a smile. Whether you’re decking the halls or shopping for someone who already has everything, you’ll find a little magic here.

Mark your calendars: November 28th kicks off the official Christmas tree season. That’s when the saws start buzzing, the cocoa starts flowing, and the North Fork officially turns into a winter wonderland.

The Lowdown

Run, North Fork, Run đŸƒâ€âžĄïž

Finding the motivation to run when it’s cold enough to see your breath? Yeah, that’s a tall order. But a few local go-getters are proving that North Fork grit doesn’t hibernate.

Xavier and Jacob Kahn, the Greenport twin duo who graduated as valedictorian and salutatorian back in 2019 and just launched Runnon “the racing app for runners.” You can challenge your friends, earn points, and settle once and for all who’s the fastest in the group chat.

Together with co-founder Myles Nowak, they’re turning friendly runs into full-blown rivalries, in the best way.

And if you’d rather race people IRL, Ava Cosby has you covered. The Greenport native started the North Fork Run Club this summer. Now they meet most Sundays at Mitchell Park for runs, walks, and post-sweat coffee from Aldo’s.

Dock Block đŸš«

Southold’s wetlands debate is heating up. Town Trustees pitched updates to strengthen shoreline protection, easy enough, right?

Then came the dock drama.

The proposed update adds more ponds and lakes to the list of places where new private docks would be banned. That didn’t sit well with some waterfront homeowners, who argued for small, sustainable docks instead of an all out ban.

Supporters say the changes are long overdue. Groups like The Group for the East End and several residents applauded the Trustees for protecting fragile waterways from overdevelopment.

The hearing’s still open for written comments until Nov. 5.

Waterfront Businesses Get a Second Wind 🌊

Thanks to a new Suffolk County “Working Waterfront” law, folks might finally get a little breathing room.

County Executive Ed Romaine signed the bill in Greenport on Sept. 29, setting aside $9.5 million through 2028 to protect commercial waterfronts.

The idea’s simple: the county can buy development rights from marinas, shipyards, and fishing businesses, kind of like the farmland preservation program from 50 years ago. Once protected, the land can only be used for marine purposes.

The county formed a 17-member committee to review applications, and North Fork towns like Greenport and Southold will be competing with Montauk and Shinnecock Marina for the funding. ($)

Foodie Friday đŸœ

Our resident burger authority Sarah is back, notebook in hand, appetite locked in, and ready for Round Two of the Great Burger Quest.

If you missed last time, here’s the deal: Sarah doesn’t chase hype. No “secret menu” gimmicks, no influencer lighting setups, no “trust me” burger tips. She grades on ten real categories, each scored out of five, for a total of 50 points. And if a burger earns a top spot, it’s because it fought for it, one juicy, perfectly balanced bite at a time.

After setting the bar sky-high at The Old Mill Inn, Sarah hit the road again, tracking down another North Fork contender.

This week, her search brought her to The North Fork Shack.

The North Fork Shack đŸ”

Presentation: 4

No frills, no fluff, just a burger in a basket, paper liner doing its patriotic duty. It’s the classic diner setup that quietly says, “Relax, we’re here to eat, not pose.”

Preparation: 3

Cooked right to that sweet spot, warm, pink, and just juicy enough to make you nod in approval. It’s the kind of medium rare that proves someone back there actually cares.

Flavor: 2

The patty had promise, just no punch, like a great song played with the volume turned down.

Bun: 4

A classic sesame seed bun that feels like summer BBQ nostalgia in every bite. Soft, sturdy, and perfectly proportioned, the kind of bun that knows its job and does it well.

Cheese: 3

Simple, reliable, nothing fancy, just your classic American slice doing what it does best melting into the meat like it’s been training for this moment.

Toppings: 3

A trusty American slice holding court with the usual suspects: lettuce, tomato, red onion, and pickles. But let’s be honest, the pickles stole the spotlight. Bright, crunchy, and clearly housemade, they brought the kind of tang that makes you pause mid-bite and say, “Yep, that’s the magic.”

Fries: 4

Golden, crispy, and dusted with just enough shallot magic to make you wonder why every fry doesn’t come this way.

Serving Size: 4

Just right, the Goldilocks of burger portions. You’ll leave satisfied, not stuffed, with enough room to contemplate dessert.

Cost: 5

At $20, this burger hits that sweet spot where quality meets value. It’s the kind of price that makes you double-check the menu and think, “Wait, that’s it?”

Overall: 3

A solid burger that plays it safe, cooked perfectly, built right, and priced fairly. It’s the kind of burger you’d gladly eat again, but maybe not text your friends about.

Final Score: 35/50

A dependable contender that delivers where it counts but leaves a little room for excitement. It’s the kind of burger you’re happy to find on the menu, satisfying, familiar, and proof that not every bite has to be a showstopper to earn its spot in the Great Burger Quest.
