The Lowdown
End of an Era on Shelter Island 💊
After nearly a century of filling prescriptions, Shelter Island Pharmacy is closing its pharmacy counter for good at the end of the day today.
The Heights staple first opened in the 1920s and had it all, soda fountain, lunch counter, and the island’s only spot for prescriptions. But after mounting losses in recent years, the pharmacy just couldn’t keep up.
The Soloviev Group, which bought the building in 2022, says they tried to find a new operator but no one could make the numbers work. The pharmacy section will close, but the lunch counter and general store will stay open.

From Lahore to Mattituck 🎥
When Pakistani filmmaker Hina Ali started digging into her country’s forgotten Jewish history, she didn’t expect to end up on the North Fork, or to make a lifelong friend.
Enter Hazel Selzer Kahan, an 86-year-old writer living in Mattituck, who just happens to have been born Jewish in Lahore.
Their unlikely friendship is the heart of Salam, Shalom, a new documentary filmed right here on the North Fork and set for a private screening next month at the North Fork Arts Center. It’s equal parts history lesson, personal story, and proof that connection crosses borders.

Local Spotlight
Krupski Farms Gets the Doug Geed Spotlight 🎃
Doug Geed dug into the heart of harvest season in this week’s Out East feature at Krupski Farms in Peconic.
The longtime family farm, started by the Krupski clan nearly 50 years ago, is a North Fork classic: part produce stand, part pumpkin paradise, part reminder of why we still love dirt under our nails.
Doug’s visit takes viewers behind the farm stand, where the Krupskis, now a multigenerational crew, are still running things. From sweet corn to late-season pumpkins, it’s a place that still believes in the slow, local kind of good.
