Shipyard Preservation ⚓️

The future of Greenport’s historic shipyard just took a big step toward staying a working waterfront.

The Suffolk County Working Waterfront Committee unanimously recommended preserving the Greenport Yacht & Shipbuilding property through the county’s new working waterfront preservation program. The proposal now heads to the County Legislature for review.

Current owner Stephen Clarke is under contract to sell the 4.3 acre property to Nick Voulgaris III, whose plan keeps the shipyard operating while adding public waterfront access, a shellfish hatchery cooperative, kayak launches, space for marine businesses, and expanded support for commercial fishing.

Supporters say the shipyard is irreplaceable. It's the North Fork’s only haul-out facility capable of servicing large vessels like the Shelter Island ferries, and ferry operators warned losing it would force repairs out of state, adding time, cost, and service disruptions.

Targeting Flock Cameras 📹

Southold's Flock license plate reader cameras are becoming targets.

Police say two cameras in Greenport were vandalized over the July 4 weekend after being splattered with paint, with wires also pulled from one. A third camera in Peconic was discovered turned away from the road, though police aren't sure whether it was intentional or simply the result of weather.

The incidents come as Flock cameras face growing scrutiny nationwide over privacy concerns, government oversight and how license plate data is collected, stored and shared. ($)

Lobsterfest Does It Again 🦞

Veterans Beach was packed Sunday as more than 1,100 people turned out for the 35th annual Lobsterfest.

Hosted by the Southold and Greenport Rotary Clubs, the event served up hundreds of lobster and steak dinners while raising money for scholarships, food banks, literacy programs and nearly 30 other community initiatives throughout the year.

This year's perfect weather didn't hurt either. The Eagle River Band kept the crowd dancing, long lines never seemed to bother anyone, and by the end of the day, another Lobsterfest was in the books.

Orient's Summer Concert Tradition 🎶

Acclaimed pianist and New York Festival of Song artistic director Steven Blier returns to Poquatuck Hall this Sunday at 3 PM for his annual concert, this year titled "Reunion."

Blier, who recently earned a Grammy nomination for Schubert/Beatles alongside baritone Theo Hoffman, will reunite with his former student for an afternoon that blends classical favorites with songs from the Beatles, Bruce Springsteen, Stephen Sondheim, George Gershwin and more.

Meet Pip 🐾

Meet Pip. She may be tiny, but don't let the size fool you, this little fluff ball has enough personality to run an entire household, and she'd happily remind you who's really in charge. Pip approaches life with complete confidence and absolutely no inside voice.

Pip is one of the most vocal, independent, and downright hilarious kittens you'll ever meet. She has an opinion about everything and isn't shy about sharing it. One minute she's delivering a dramatic speech about the injustices of dinner being three minutes late, and the next she's completely melted in your hands, purring away the second you start petting her. She's affectionate on her own royal terms, endlessly entertaining, and guaranteed to keep you laughing with her over the top antics and larger than life attitude.

If you're looking for a quiet kitten who fades into the background, Pip would like to formally decline your application. Shelter Island Heads to NYC 🦪

You do not usually have to leave the East End to find a proper clambake. This time, though, one of Shelter Island’s most talked about chefs is bringing the shoreline with him.

Chef Armond Joseph of Léon 1909 will take over Pier 57 in Manhattan for a one night James Beard Foundation dinner inspired by the classic summer clambake. Known for weaving together seaside, Italian, and Palestinian influences, Chef Joseph is giving the tradition a distinctly Shelter Island spin.

The menu will spotlight wild foraged ingredients, sustainably caught seafood, and other hyper local treasures from the farms and waters of the East End. It’s a chance for New Yorkers to get a taste of Shelter Island without catching the ferry.
